What Reading FC announced in February 2025
Reading Football Club said it had signed a letter of intent with a potential purchaser and entered an exclusivity period. The proposed next steps were final due diligence and legal completion; the club did not identify the purchaser or say ownership had transferred. Fan Banter reproduced the club’s statement.
The proposed transaction scope included Dai Yongge’s shareholding in The Reading Football Club Limited, the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Facility. The announcement did not publish a valuation, financing details or a completion date.
Exclusivity is not the same as a completed sale
Exclusivity means the club and the prospective purchaser were proceeding within an exclusive negotiating period. A letter of intent signals a proposed transaction, while due diligence allows parties to examine relevant financial, legal and operational matters. Neither step, on its own, establishes that the buyer has taken ownership.

Reading said: “Whilst timelines cannot be guaranteed, the structure of the deal should allow for a quick completion, which would be for the benefit of all concerned.” That was the club’s expectation, not a deadline or confirmation that completion followed.
What is known about the buyer and the pundit reaction
The February statement described the buyer only as a potential purchaser. It did not name a person, company or consortium, and the available account does not establish a confirmed competing bid. The identity of the pundit behind the headline phrase “This is massive news” is also unverified; no matching quotation or attributable source is established.

Has the takeover happened?
The available verified material does not establish whether the proposed sale was later completed, cancelled or remained active. The February 2025 announcement should therefore be read as a transaction in progress at that time, not as evidence of Reading’s ownership status today.
Why the 2017 takeover is only background
Chinese brother and sister Dai Yongge and Dai Xiu Li became Reading’s majority shareholders in 2017 after EFL approval. A historical account says the EFL had no objection following its review and imposed additional reporting requirements, including enhanced financial monitoring. What the announcement meant for supporters
Some supporters saw a possible takeover as a reason for fans to return.
