Reading FC’s takeover is complete, not still progressing: Redwood Holdings Limited acquired the club on 14 May 2025 after EFL clearance. The deal included the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. That gave supporters reason for relief and cautious optimism—but ownership change alone does not prove lasting financial stability or sporting recovery.
What is the latest on the Reading FC takeover?
The sale moved from an agreement in principle to completion in May 2025. Reading announced the proposed sale to Redwood Holdings Limited on 3 May, with legal steps still outstanding; the transaction completed 11 days later, after EFL clearance. Reading’s 3 May statement described the proposed transaction, while BBC Sport reported completion on 14 May.
| Date | Development | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| 22 April 2025 | The EFL extended Dai Yongge’s divestment deadline to 5 May. | The league cited progress on the proposed sale but said it continued to monitor Reading’s immediate cash-flow requirements. The extension indicated movement toward a deal, not that financial pressures had ended. EFL statement |
| 3 May 2025 | Reading announced a sale in principle to Redwood Holdings Limited. | The announcement was not yet completion; legal technicalities remained. Reading statement |
| 14 May 2025 | The takeover completed after EFL clearance. | Redwood acquired the club’s full shareholding, and the stadium and training ground were included. BBC Sport |
| 15 May 2025 | New chairman Rob Couhig spoke publicly about the club’s financial approach. | His comments were a statement of intent, not independent evidence of financial results. BBC Sport |
Who owns Reading FC now?
Redwood Holdings Limited acquired 100% of Reading Football Club’s shareholding from former owner Dai Yongge. Rob Couhig became chairman, and Couhig and Todd Trosclair joined the board, according to BBC Sport’s completion report.
The transaction included the Select Car Leasing Stadium and Bearwood Park Training Ground. That matters because it placed the club and those key facilities within the same transaction rather than leaving their status outside the announced sale.

Why was cautious optimism reasonable?
There were concrete reasons for relief: the transfer crossed the line, the EFL cleared it, and the club’s stadium and training base were included. The sale replaced an uncertain process with a settled ownership structure.
Couhig told BBC Sport on 15 May 2025 that the owners had a spending plan and said “we will be strictly financially sound.” He also told supporters, “My message to the fans right now is to not look back, it’s all about the future, we’re ready to go get it.” These are the chairman’s stated intentions, not audited proof that the club has achieved long-term financial stability. Why does the financial caution remain?
During the sale process, the EFL explicitly said it was monitoring Reading’s immediate cash-flow requirements. That caveat is important: a completed takeover resolves who owns the club, but it does not by itself establish that cash-flow pressure has disappeared or that the club is on a sustainable footing. The EFL’s 22 April 2025 statement documented the monitoring; it did not announce that the underlying concern had been resolved.
BBC Sport reported that Reading’s point deductions under Yongge totalled 18 points. That figure is BBC Sport’s reporting, not a statistic attributed here to the EFL statement. BBC Sport, 14 May 2025.

Did Reading receive a takeover offer in 2026?
In an interview published in February 2026, board member Rick Catania said the club had received approaches to buy shares or the club outright, and that serious offers were considered. He said the owners were “enjoying the process” and “we’re not done yet.” The report also said the owners had bought out Aliya Investments’ stake and were still working out the resulting share distribution. It did not establish an exact current ownership split or confirm that Reading had returned to a formal sale process or completed another sale. Greatest Hits Radio Berkshire & North Hampshire, 9 February, updated 10 February 2026.
Catania also said the club was “vastly improved” compared with a year earlier, while acknowledging “there’s still plenty of work to do.” That is his assessment as a board member, not an independently verified financial finding. Greatest Hits Radio.
