Razorpay Online Gateway vs. Stripe: Which Is Better for India and Global Payments?

Razorpay is usually the practical choice for India-first payments; Stripe can suit global businesses with an eligible account. Compare availability, methods, fees and settlement before deciding.

For an India-first business, Razorpay is usually the more practical starting point; for a global business with an eligible Stripe account, Stripe may be the better fit. The decision turns first on whether you can open the account you need: Stripe India is invite-only for selected businesses, while Razorpay’s international-card processing also requires approval. The right choice then depends on customer payment methods, recurring billing, settlement currency and the full cost—not just the advertised percentage.

Choose by business situation

Business situation Better starting point Why
Most customers are in India and UPI matters Razorpay It is built around Indian payment methods, including UPI, cards, net banking and wallets.
Indian ecommerce with local payment options Razorpay Its India-focused offering includes local checkout methods and India-centric settlement workflows.
Global SaaS with an approved Stripe account or supported foreign entity Stripe Stripe offers broad international currency and payment-platform capabilities, subject to account and market eligibility.
Indian startup selling abroad but unable to obtain Stripe approval Razorpay International, if approved Foreign-card acceptance is available after Razorpay activation and compliance review.
India plus international customers, with UPI and global cards both important Potentially both A two-provider setup can route Indian local payments and international transactions separately, at the cost of added integration and reconciliation work.
Digital business whose main need is tax and merchant-of-record administration Consider a merchant of record Services such as Paddle, Lemon Squeezy or Dodo Payments are a different model from a payment gateway; compare eligibility, fees and product limits separately.

Pricing and availability figures below reflect provider pages checked August 16–18, 2026. Confirm the applicable terms with the provider before committing: account-specific approval, payment method, transaction route and settlement setup can change the result.

Stripe India availability is the first gate

“Stripe” can mean an Indian Stripe account, an account belonging to a company in another supported country, or a foreign business accepting payments from Indian customers. These are not interchangeable. Stripe says India is invite-only: a new Indian business must request an invitation, and Stripe currently supports selected businesses with an international-expansion focus. See Stripe’s India availability and international-payments guidance.

That means Stripe’s global feature set is not, by itself, evidence that a particular Indian sole proprietor or company can sign up. A separately incorporated overseas entity may be eligible under that country’s rules, but it has its own incorporation, banking, tax and compliance implications. Do not assume an overseas entity automatically makes a business eligible for every Stripe product or payment method.

  • Process chip cards in just two seconds.

Razorpay is also not an automatic route to foreign payments. Indian merchants must enable international payments and pass the relevant account and compliance checks. Treat eligibility and approval as prerequisites for both providers, not as details to investigate after building checkout.

At a glance: the practical differences

Factor Razorpay for an India-based merchant Stripe for an India-based merchant
Availability Account onboarding and payment-method activation depend on business approval. India is invite-only for selected businesses.
India-local payments Strong India focus, including UPI, cards, net banking and wallets; exact availability depends on account and integration. Do not assume Stripe India provides the same India-local method mix; confirm the methods available to the approved account.
Foreign cards Available after international-card activation and review. International payments require an approved Stripe India account and completion of the required process.
Presentment and settlement For Indian accounts, international settlement is generally in INR; currency handling depends on the setup. Stripe’s cited Indian cross-border routes settle to an Indian bank account in INR; the mainly-international route supports 135+ currencies for Visa and Mastercard presentment.
Headline pricing signals Standard plan lists 2%; some instruments, including international cards, are shown at 3% on Razorpay material. India page shows 2% for cards issued in India, 3% for cards issued outside India in one presentation, and a 4.3% mainly-international route; conversion can add 2% where required.
Recurring payments Cards, UPI and eMandate are documented, with method-specific limits. Stripe Billing offers subscription and usage-based billing capabilities, subject to account, method and regulatory eligibility.

Razorpay’s standard-rate and payment-mode information is in its pricing and payments FAQ. Stripe’s India prices and dispute-related fees are on its India pricing page; its separate explanation of domestic and mainly-international routes is in cross-border pricing for Indian sellers.

Payment methods: local coverage matters more than logo counts

Payments from Indian customers

Razorpay advertises 100+ payment modes for India, including UPI, cards, net banking, wallets, EMI and PayLater options. Its India mobile-app gateway page describes that broad method set. The exact methods a merchant can offer are still subject to business approval, account configuration, integration and transaction type.

Stripe should be assessed on the methods actually enabled for the merchant’s account and the countries it can serve—not on a global list. For India-specific checkout, confirm whether the methods your customers rely on are available to your particular Stripe account. If UPI is central to conversion, that makes Razorpay a more natural first candidate.

Payments from customers outside India

Razorpay’s international-card capability is aimed at eligible merchants accepting foreign-issued cards; additional methods can depend on the merchant’s country context and account activation. Stripe’s international route for eligible Indian accounts supports Visa and Mastercard presentment in 135+ currencies. Stripe also describes broader global coverage, but a global platform claim does not guarantee that an India-based merchant can onboard every customer country or method. See Stripe’s payments overview.

“International payments” can describe several different transactions: an Indian business charging a foreign-issued card, a foreign company selling to an Indian customer, an Indian customer paying in INR with a foreign card, or a merchant presenting a foreign currency. Ask separately whether the customer’s preferred method works, what currency appears at checkout, what currency reaches the merchant’s bank, and whether recurring billing is supported for that route.

Compare total cost, not just the processing percentage

The published figures are not directly interchangeable. Razorpay lists a 2% standard-plan rate and shows some instruments, including international cards and Amex, at 3% on its cited material. Stripe’s India page shows 2% for cards issued in India and 3% for cards issued outside India in one pricing presentation; its mainly-international cross-border route is listed at 4.3%, with another 2% where currency conversion is required. These are route-specific signals, not a universal fee for every transaction.

Razorpay says GST applies to its fees under its stated rules, subject to exceptions. Stripe’s published figures should also be checked for what is included in the merchant’s actual agreement. For either provider, calculate GST, conversion charges or FX impact, any payment-method-specific fees, refund treatment, dispute charges and negotiated terms. An advertised processing fee alone is not the amount your business necessarily bears.

Illustrative domestic transaction: ₹10,000

At Razorpay’s stated 2% standard-plan rate, a ₹10,000 transaction would imply a ₹200 processing fee before applicable GST and any account-specific or payment-method charges. If the transaction uses an instrument shown at 3%, the corresponding fee would be ₹300 before applicable GST. This arithmetic is illustrative; the applicable rate depends on the method and merchant’s terms.

At Stripe’s India page’s 2% rate for cards issued in India, the fee on ₹10,000 would be ₹200 before any applicable taxes or other charges. This is a card illustration, not a comparison with UPI, and does not override account-specific pricing.

Illustrative foreign-card or cross-border transaction

There is no honest single rupee total for a “$100 foreign payment” without knowing the presentment currency, exchange rate, whether the customer’s card is foreign-issued, which Stripe pricing route applies, whether conversion is required, and each provider’s account-specific terms. On the Stripe mainly-international route, 4.3% of a $100 charge is $4.30 before any additional 2% conversion fee where required. If the applicable route instead charges 3% for a foreign-issued card, that is $3 before other costs. Razorpay’s cited material shows 3% for some international instruments, but its international quote should be confirmed for the merchant’s account and setup.

For a useful comparison, request written confirmation of the fee for the exact combination of merchant country, customer country, card or payment method, presentment currency, settlement currency, recurring or one-time charge, and refund or dispute event. Stripe’s India page lists a ₹1,000 dispute-received fee and a ₹1,000 manual dispute-countered fee, with the latter subject to the stated return terms if the dispute is won. Provider pricing pages do not establish a comparable all-in Razorpay dispute figure for every account.

International payments from India: approval, documents and settlement

Activating international cards on Razorpay

Razorpay’s Indian merchant documentation calls for an active, KYC-complete account and a valid website with relevant terms, privacy, refund/cancellation and, where applicable, shipping information. Tangible-goods businesses may need an Import/Export Code (IEC); additional transaction or settlement evidence may be requested. Its documented dashboard route is:

  1. Log in to the Razorpay Dashboard.
  2. Open Account & Settings.
  3. Find International payments under Payment methods.
  4. Select Activate for international cards.
  5. Submit the requested business details and documents, then wait for Razorpay and its banking partners to review the request.

Requirements and approval are merchant-specific. See Razorpay’s international-card activation documentation before planning a launch date.

Enabling international payments on Stripe India

An Indian business first needs an active Stripe India account, which is currently invitation-based. International processing then has a separate process and documentation requirements. Stripe says an IEC is required for some use cases, including international Amex acceptance, and individuals cannot use Stripe India’s international-payment route. Its eligibility details are in Stripe’s India international-payments support guidance and its India documentation.

For Stripe’s mainly-international route, purpose codes, IEC details and payment-advice documentation may apply. The cited Indian cross-border routes pay out to Indian bank accounts in INR, even when customers see another currency. Razorpay’s Indian international-payment material also describes INR settlement generally; the exact conversion process and settlement cycle depend on the account and applicable rules. Razorpay says the default settlement cycle can be viewed in the Dashboard and early settlement may be offered for an additional charge. See its international-payments FAQ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the business has USD expenses, wants to hold foreign currency, or needs foreign-currency accounting, INR settlement can create conversion and treasury costs beyond the gateway percentage. Confirm the payout currency and timing before selecting a provider.

Subscriptions and recurring payments

For subscriptions, compare the authorization method and renewal behavior—not merely whether a provider advertises billing. The relevant questions include mandate creation, permitted recurring amounts, supported currency, renewal retries, failed-payment recovery, plan changes, usage-based billing, customer cancellation and refund handling.

  • Compact size, with 145cm USB cord, two 3mm-diameter screw holes for fixing at the bottom, a LED indicator light

Razorpay recurring methods

Razorpay documents recurring payments through cards, UPI and eMandate, with constraints: its subscription settings say UPI recurring charges are supported below ₹5,000 and are INR-only; eMandate is also INR-only. Cards can support recurring payments in supported international currencies where enabled. Check the current Razorpay subscription payment-method settings for the account and flow you intend to use.

Stripe Billing

Stripe Billing is positioned for subscriptions and usage-based billing, with broader global platform capabilities where the account is eligible. That does not mean every Billing feature or payment method is available to every Indian merchant. Confirm account eligibility, supported payment methods and India-specific regulatory requirements. Stripe’s Billing product page describes the product; its India account status remains the gating issue for a new Indian business.

An Indian SaaS company may find Razorpay better for combining local UPI recurring payments with domestic methods, while an eligible Stripe account may be a better fit for global subscription infrastructure. Test mandate creation, renewal authorization, retries, failed payments, cancellations and refunds using the exact customer geography and payment method before migration or launch.

Checkout, APIs and developer operations

Both providers offer integration paths, but claims that one is objectively easier need a comparable implementation test. Razorpay provides sandbox access and test API keys; its documented test flow can simulate success and failure without charging real money. Stripe advertises prebuilt payment UIs, Checkout, libraries and Link, alongside broad global method coverage. See Razorpay’s payments FAQ and Stripe Checkout.

Before choosing, build a small proof of concept around your real use cases and assess:

  • How quickly the team can create a payment, issue a full or partial refund, and verify a webhook.
  • Whether the integration supports idempotency, the required capture flow and reliable handling of duplicate or delayed events.
  • Official SDKs and plugins for the frameworks and ecommerce platform you use.
  • Clarity of error messages and India-specific compliance guidance.
  • Subscription lifecycle support, reconciliation exports and the effort to migrate customer/payment records later.

Keep your internal customer, order and subscription records independent of either provider’s identifiers. Provider-specific subscription objects and checkout assumptions can make a later migration harder.

  • App sends deposits to your bank account within 1 to 2 business days, or enjoy instant deposits (fees apply).

Refunds, disputes and operational risk

Refund and dispute handling is part of the cost and workload. Check the refund timeline, whether partial refunds are available for your payment method, how the customer’s currency is treated, what evidence is required for a dispute, and how events appear in reports. Razorpay’s documentation describes international disputes as a network-and-bank process whose result is determined through the relevant parties, rather than guaranteed by the gateway; see its guidance on international payments.

Stripe’s India pricing page explicitly lists the ₹1,000 dispute-received fee and its manual countered-dispute fee terms. Neither provider’s acceptance of a merchant guarantees authorization rates, successful renewals, a particular fraud-loss rate or uninterrupted settlement. Verify current restricted-business policies directly, especially if the product or industry is regulated or higher-risk.

When using both providers makes sense

A dual-gateway architecture can be sensible for a business that needs Razorpay’s India-local payment methods and a separate provider for global cards or subscriptions. It is not automatically safer or cheaper: two integrations mean more operational surface area.

  • Route based on customer geography or payment method only when both provider accounts are approved for the intended transactions.
  • Maintain a shared order and customer ledger so refunds, disputes and support cases can be traced across providers.
  • Design webhook handling to tolerate retries and out-of-order events, and reconcile payouts and fees separately for each provider.
  • Provide a fallback checkout only if it does not create duplicate charges or confuse a customer whose payment is still processing.
  • Keep a documented process for account reviews, settlement delays and provider outages.

Which option should you choose?

India ecommerce or local services

Indian SaaS selling in India and abroad

For India-local recurring payments, assess Razorpay’s card, UPI and eMandate constraints against your pricing model. If Stripe has approved the account and your company needs global billing, compare it on the international subscription flows you actually plan to use. A split setup may be warranted if neither provider covers both needs well.

Global SaaS or an overseas company

Stripe is a strong candidate where the merchant entity is in a supported country or has an approved Stripe account and needs its global payment and Billing platform. If the company is Indian, obtain confirmation of Stripe India eligibility before treating Stripe as an available option.

Foreign company selling to Indian customers

Compare the foreign merchant’s Stripe account capabilities with Razorpay’s offering for foreign businesses accepting Indian customers. Local methods, merchant-country eligibility, settlement currency and compliance can differ from the Indian-merchant-to-foreign-customer case. Razorpay’s documentation for that direction is here.

Digital products where tax administration is the core problem

Compare a merchant-of-record provider such as Paddle, Lemon Squeezy or Dodo Payments separately from gateways. A merchant of record can take on parts of billing and tax administration, but may charge more, limit eligible products or markets, and give the seller less control over the payment relationship. It is not a like-for-like replacement for India-native UPI acceptance.
