What was the game supposed to be?
Rare’s official announcement described a “natural and magical world,” new ways to play and an original experience intended to create meaningful shared experiences. The announcement did not settle the game’s genre, story, protagonist, gameplay loop or business model. Xbox Wire’s announcement also presented Everwild alongside the continuing development of Sea of Thieves.

What happened at Rare?
Reporting said Rare experienced job losses and restructuring during the cancellation wave. VGC also reported that veteran Rare designer Gregg Mayles left after the cancellation and later covered a Rare veteran moving to another Xbox Game Studios role. Any cancelled intellectual property could theoretically return, but there is no reliable evidence in the available reporting that Microsoft, Xbox or Rare has revived, licensed, sold or restarted Everwild.
