Correction: Xiaomi has not officially announced or listed a Xiaomi 16 Pro Max in its authoritative product records. Xiaomi skipped the “16” generation and launched the Xiaomi 17 series instead. The phone most searches mean is the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max, announced in China on September 25, 2025.
This guide covers the 17 Pro Max’s specifications, pricing, availability, cameras, rear display and the risks of importing one. As of August 18, 2026, current coverage identifies it as a China-market model rather than an officially sold US, UK, EU or Indian phone.
Quick verdict
The Xiaomi 17 Pro Max is compelling hardware for enthusiasts: a 6.9-inch 120Hz display, Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, a 7,500mAh battery, 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and a 2.9-inch rear AMOLED screen. Its Leica-branded triple-camera system adds a 5x periscope telephoto.
- Best for: buyers who want maximum battery capacity, a very large display and unusual rear-screen features, and who understand China-ROM importing.
- Not for: buyers who need guaranteed local warranty, carrier compatibility, straightforward Google services or the simplest returns.
- Best camera-focused alternative: Xiaomi 17 Ultra, where officially sold.
- Best practical alternative: Xiaomi 17, the smaller model with a better chance of official global support.
Xiaomi 16 Pro Max versus Xiaomi 17 Pro Max
There is no confirmed official Xiaomi 16 Pro Max to review. Xiaomi moved from the 15 generation to the 17 generation; Omdia and Xiaomi’s own product material identify the 17 series as the relevant generation. Third-party comparison pages can contain “16 Pro Max” entries, but a database listing is not evidence of a released phone.

What the rear display actually does
The 2.9-inch panel is more than decoration, but its usefulness depends on your habits. It can show a preview when you shoot with the superior rear cameras, making rear-camera selfies and group photographs easier. It also supports selected notifications, music controls, timers, wallpapers and decorative themes.
A QR code or other information can remain visible on the rear panel while the main screen is used for another task. WIRED described that as potentially useful but had not directly tested every such workflow. Gaming is possible with an appropriate accessory or case, yet the small panel and camera module make it a specialist feature rather than a substitute for the main display. (WIRED hands-on)

Performance and software
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 places the phone at the top end of Android hardware for its generation. The large battery and LTPO display are designed to reduce charging anxiety, while HyperOS 3 is based on Android 16 in the stated specification.
Imported China-market software is the major qualification. Google Play, Google Wallet, Android Auto, banking and authentication apps, push notifications, wearable pairing, language choices, DRM certification and update timing can depend on the exact ROM and seller. A seller’s “global ROM” may be modified firmware, not an official global release. Ask for the installed build number and written confirmation of the services you need before paying.
Cameras: versatile, not automatically the best Xiaomi camera
The Leica-branded system combines three 50MP cameras: a main camera, an ultrawide and a 5x optical periscope telephoto. That gives the Pro Max more focal-length flexibility than a basic main-plus-ultrawide phone, and the rear screen can help you compose using the rear cameras.
Do not infer that “Pro Max” means Xiaomi’s best camera. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra is the more photography-oriented alternative. A meaningful choice requires comparable output, especially zoom, night photography and video, rather than megapixel counts alone. WIRED’s hands-on coverage describes the Pro Max hardware and use cases but is not a universal camera laboratory test (source).

Battery and charging
The 7,500mAh cell is unusually large for a flagship. WIRED reported that its review unit lasted two days between charges under that publication’s usage pattern; that is an attributed hands-on result, not a promise for every user or network.
100W wired and 50W wireless are maximum advertised rates. Real charging speed depends on compatible Xiaomi equipment, the charger supplied in the package, regional plug hardware, temperature and the phone’s charging policy. Check whether the listing includes a charger and whether it supports the USB-PD/PPS behavior you expect.
Price, launch date and realistic cost

| Current official China signal | CNY 6,499 starting shown in Xiaomi’s current product navigation; this is a listing signal, not a guarantee for every configuration (Xiaomi) |
| Official US MSRP | Not established in the available product record |
| Imported price | Must be checked on a live seller page and calculated after tax, shipping, warranty and returns; no single global import price is reliable |
Prices and stock should be checked on August 18, 2026 or the day you order. Xiaomi’s China purchase channel is this official page; it is primarily useful to China-based buyers and experienced importers.
Availability by region
United States
There is no established official US launch price or local Pro Max sales channel in the available record. Compatibility depends on the exact China SKU and your carrier’s LTE and 5G bands, VoLTE, Wi-Fi calling and certification. A phone that connects to one band may still lack full carrier functionality.

UK and Europe
Do not treat global Xiaomi 17-series availability as proof that the Pro Max is sold locally. Current coverage identifies the Pro Max as China-exclusive; check Xiaomi’s country site for a specific announcement.
India and other markets
A retailer listing or an India-facing specification page does not establish official local launch, warranty or software support. Confirm the model number, importer of record and repair location.
Pro Max versus the main alternatives
| Phone | Choose it when | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi 17 Pro Max | You want the 6.9-inch screen, rear display and 7,500mAh battery | China-ROM, warranty, band and landed-cost risks |
| Xiaomi 17 Ultra | Camera performance and official regional support matter most | No rear display; compare local pricing and tested camera output |
| Xiaomi 17 | You prefer a smaller 6.3-inch phone, lower likely cost and broader availability | No rear display and a smaller battery |
| iPhone 17 Pro Max | You want iOS, Apple services, video processing and established local support | Less hardware experimentation and greater ecosystem lock-in |
| Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra | You value official support, carrier compatibility, Samsung software and possible stylus features | Compare charging, battery capacity and total price against the imported Xiaomi |
The iPhone and Samsung comparisons should be made using local storage prices, taxes, trade-in value, warranty and resale—not benchmark numbers alone.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Import checklist: prevent an expensive mistake
- Confirm the exact RAM/storage SKU and model number.
- Ask whether the phone has its original China ROM, an official global ROM or seller-modified firmware.
- Verify Google Play, Wallet, Android Auto, banking apps, notifications, languages and DRM on that exact build.
- Compare every LTE and 5G band with your carrier, including VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling.
- Get written warranty terms, repair location and the return period, including software-incompatibility returns.
- Confirm charger inclusion, plug type, 100W charging requirements and accessory compatibility.
- Calculate the delivered total: device, shipping, VAT or sales tax, customs and any restocking fee.
- Check whether a rear-display case, charging accessory or other advertised feature is sold separately.
The Chinese Xiaomi warranty should not be assumed to transfer worldwide. Repairs may require shipping the phone back to China, and firmware changes can affect updates, bootloader status or warranty coverage.

Who should buy, wait or avoid it?
Buy
Buy the Xiaomi 17 Pro Max through a seller with transparent SKU, ROM, band, warranty and landed-price information if the rear display and huge battery are worth the import risk to you.
Choose an alternative
Choose the Xiaomi 17 Ultra when photography and official regional support outweigh the rear screen. Choose the Xiaomi 17 when you want a smaller, more conventional globally sold Xiaomi flagship.
Avoid
Avoid listings titled “Xiaomi 16 Pro Max” that cannot prove the official model identity, or any deal that hides firmware, network compatibility, taxes, charger contents or warranty terms.
