RadioShack’s “online-first” rebirth was a plan announced in 2020, not evidence that the chain returned to its former scale or that it operates the same way today. Retail Ecommerce Ventures (REV), which had acquired the brand, said it would sell through RadioShack.com and an Amazon storefront rather than rebuild the old nationwide store network. Later reporting raised financial and legal questions about REV, while the sources available here do not establish RadioShack’s current ownership, website status, or product availability.
What did RadioShack announce in 2020?
In November 2020, REV co-founders Alex Mehr and Tai Lopez described a leaner, digital retail strategy for RadioShack. The plan was to use the brand in a broad online marketplace, with RadioShack.com and an Amazon storefront as sales channels. The Associated Press, in a report published by the Los Angeles Times, characterized this as the owners’ strategy—not a completed return to national retailing. The approach was explicitly different from restoring the former chain. The AP reported that REV had no immediate plan to return RadioShack to street corners and shopping centers. It also reported that about 400 RadioShack locations remained open in November 2020, but those stores were independent of the REV-owned parent company. That figure describes the situation at the time, not a current store count.
Why try an online-first model?
Reach shoppers without rebuilding a store network
An online business can make a brand’s products available beyond the neighborhoods served by individual stores. REV’s proposal relied on the company’s own website and Amazon, rather than the costs and infrastructure of re-establishing RadioShack’s former footprint. The sources report the intended channels, but do not establish that the strategy produced a particular level of sales or savings.

Use familiar electronics categories and brand recognition
RadioShack had a long association with radios, walkie-talkies, electronics components, repair, and hobby projects. The AP report described expected merchandise in categories such as batteries, phone chargers, and headphones. These examples explain the brand context and the proposed assortment; they are not confirmation that those products are available from RadioShack today.
Mehr argued that the name retained value, telling the AP: “Brand means trust. And the brand is very, very strong. I have quantifiable data that the brand is very strong.” That was the co-founder’s claim, not an independently reported measure of customer trust or buying behavior.

Why was the plan not a guaranteed comeback?
Nostalgia is not the same as current customer trust
A remembered name can attract attention, but an online retailer still has to earn confidence through the products it sells and the experience it provides. Robert Passikoff, founder and president of Brand Keys, cautioned the AP: “It’s a very thin line between being iconic and being dead.” He also questioned whether memory alone could be turned into commercial success. His comments were an expert’s assessment of the risk, not a measurement of RadioShack’s results.
Amazon was both a sales channel and a formidable rival
Mehr described Amazon to the AP as “a big mall with a lot of traffic” and called it a partner and distribution channel. Marketing consultant Allen Adamson offered the opposing perspective: “Amazon is the Death Star,” pointing to its breadth, convenience, and speed. Those views capture the strategic tension: a marketplace could put RadioShack-branded goods in front of many shoppers, while also placing the brand beside competitors with vast assortments. The reporting does not show how the channel performed for RadioShack.

What happened to RadioShack before the proposed revival?
The brand’s 2020 strategy followed years of decline and restructuring. The AP reported that RadioShack filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2015 and again two years later, after store redesigns and other changes failed to attract customers. It also said the company recorded its last profit in 2011. RadioShack had once been prominent in the late 1970s and early 1980s, but struggled to capitalize on the PC boom and later shifts toward portable devices.
In November 2019, REV acquired RadioShack, according to Hackaday’s contemporaneous account. The company planned to relaunch the website around the brand’s 100th anniversary in 2021. That was a reported target at the time; it does not establish that the relaunch happened as planned or that the anniversary produced a durable business recovery. Hackaday’s November 19, 2020 report.

What later reporting said about REV
Subsequent reporting added uncertainty about the owner behind the revival plan. Bloomberg Law reported on March 3, 2023, that REV was sounding out investors about financing through a possible bankruptcy and considering pledging some brand intellectual property, citing people familiar with the matter. The report described a possibility under discussion, not proof that a bankruptcy occurred. Bloomberg Law’s 2023 report.
On September 23, 2025, Bloomberg Law reported that the Securities and Exchange Commission alleged REV operated a Ponzi-like scheme while raising investor funds to revive brands including RadioShack. Is RadioShack online now, and will stores reopen?
The 2020 announcement supports a historical answer: REV planned to pursue online retail through RadioShack.com and Amazon, with no immediate plan to restore the old store network. The reporting cited here does not verify whether RadioShack.com currently trades, who owns the brand today, what its current product catalog contains, or whether stores are operating under the brand. It therefore cannot establish a current online relaunch or a plan to reopen stores.
