That is a claim recorded in bankruptcy paperwork—not a court finding that Rad ultimately owed or paid the full amount. Tariffs added pressure to an already troubled e-bike business, but the available reporting does not establish that tariffs alone caused Rad’s bankruptcy.
What the $8.36 million figure means
The figure is the amount Rad Power Bikes listed for CBP in its bankruptcy schedules: $8,363,749. Bicycle Retailer and Industry News reported in 2025 that Rad categorized the claim as disputed and that CBP was the largest unsecured creditor.
That distinction matters. A scheduled claim is an amount recorded by a debtor in its bankruptcy paperwork. A disputed claim has not necessarily been accepted as valid for the stated amount. It is different from an allowed claim—the amount recognized in the case—and different again from money ultimately paid. The sources available here do not establish CBP’s final allowed amount or whether the claim was settled or paid.
Why it is described as a tariff claim
The reporting identifies CBP’s claim as related to tariffs, or import duties. Customs duties can become liabilities when an importer owes money under applicable import rules, but the reported schedule does not, by itself, explain the underlying entries, calculations, or dispute. It would therefore be inaccurate to present the entire $8.36 million as a final, uncontested tariff bill.

How the claim compares with Rad’s filing-era finances
Bicycle Retailer and Industry News reported that Rad’s bankruptcy filing estimated $32.1 million in assets and $72.8 million in liabilities. Those are estimates disclosed at filing in 2025, not current financial statements or a final accounting of what creditors recovered. In a bankruptcy, scheduled liabilities can include claims that are contested, and assets may realize different values when sold.
GeekWire reported gross revenue figures disclosed in Rad’s bankruptcy reporting of $129.8 million in 2023, $103.8 million in 2024, and $63.3 million so far in 2025 at the time of filing. The 2025 figure was a year-to-date amount, so it should not be compared with the full-year totals as though all three covered equivalent periods. Revenue also is not profit: these figures do not show how much Rad retained after product, operating, financing, or other costs.
Did tariffs cause Rad Power Bikes to go bankrupt?
The evidence supports tariffs as one pressure on Rad and the wider e-bike industry, not as a proven sole cause of the bankruptcy. The bankruptcy reporting shows declining gross revenue across 2023 and 2024, while the filing-era estimates show liabilities substantially exceeding assets. Those facts describe financial strain, but they do not isolate the effect of tariffs from demand, costs, or other business conditions.
The broader market was also changing. The Washington Post reported in 2025, citing Circana, that estimated U.S. e-bike retail sales peaked at about $878 million in 2022. That is a market estimate, not Rad’s revenue or sales, and it does not establish why any individual company later struggled.

Who acquired Rad Power Bikes’ assets?
A January 2026 report said Life EV won the auction for Rad Power Bikes’ assets, with court approval still pending at that time. A later third-party docket index shows case activity through August 25, 2026, but the sources available do not establish the final outcome of that approval or the disposition of CBP’s claim. Winning an asset auction should not be treated as proof that the buyer assumed every debt of the bankrupt company; asset-sale terms and court orders determine what transfers.
How e-bike tariffs were changing in 2026
Tariff rates depend on the applicable authority and effective date, as well as a product’s country of origin and import classification. A rate discussed for one class of imports or country should not be applied automatically to every e-bike or shipment.
In an update dated July 24, 2026, PeopleForBikes said new tariffs took effect after the 10% Section 122 tariff expired. It reported that 10% or 12.5% rates replaced that tariff in most covered cases, with limits on stacking tariffs for some countries. Those figures describe the update’s account of covered cases at that date; they are not a universal e-bike tariff rate. Importers need to check the rules for the particular product, origin, and entry date.
Quick Recap
What readers should—and should not—infer
- Established: Rad listed CBP’s $8,363,749 tariff-related claim in its schedules and marked it disputed.
- Not established by that listing: that a court finally determined Rad owed the full amount, or that Rad paid it.
- Established: reporting described financial pressures, falling reported revenue, and a changing e-bike market and tariff environment.
- Not established: that tariffs alone caused the bankruptcy, or that the 2026 tariff rates applied to every e-bike import.
