R35 GT-R vs. R34 Skyline GT-R: Why the R35 May Never Match Its Value

Australian recorded auctions show a higher average for R34 Skyline GT-Rs than R35 GT-Rs, but the gap is not a guaranteed forecast. Here’s what the figures—and the 25-year U.S. import rule—actually tell buyers.

In one recent Australian recorded-auction sample, R34 Skyline GT-Rs averaged about twice as much as R35 GT-Rs. That is evidence of a current gap in that market—not proof that the R35 can never catch up. The R34’s identity as the last Skyline GT-R and its lower reported production may help explain its collector appeal, but individual cars vary sharply in value, and no available figures guarantee what either generation will be worth later.

How much more did R34 GT-Rs sell for than R35s?

AutoMarkets’ analysis, updated September 16, 2026, covers recorded Australian auction sales across four GT-R generations. In that sample, R34s had a higher average sale price, but the broad ranges show why an average is not a valuation for a particular car.

Generation Average recorded sale Sales in sample Recorded sale range
R34 Skyline GT-R A$281,973 24 A$144,000–646,100
R35 GT-R A$138,888 25 A$68,000–310,000

These are Australian auction results, not asking prices or global market values. The R34 average was a little more than twice the R35 average in this sample, yet the sale ranges overlap: some R35s sold for more than some R34s. Variant, originality, condition, kilometres and documented history all matter. A lower-priced car can also prove costly if it needs substantial repairs. (AutoMarkets’ recorded-auction analysis; AutoMarkets’ discussion of valuation factors)

Why does the R34 have a collector-market advantage?

It is the final Skyline GT-R

Nissan says the R35 launched in 2007 as the Nissan GT-R, no longer carrying the Skyline name. That makes the R34 the last generation in the Skyline GT-R line, a distinction that can matter to collectors who value the nameplate’s history as well as a car’s performance. It is a plausible source of appeal, not proof that heritage alone caused the price gap. (Nissan’s GT-R heritage history)

Reported production totals favor relative R34 scarcity

Nissan reported that approximately 48,000 R35s were produced over the model’s 18-year run, which ended in 2025. The Skyline GT-R Registry reports 11,577 R34 GT-Rs; that figure is registry data, not a Nissan-published count. The totals suggest fewer R34s, but production numbers alone do not establish why prices differ or predict what they will do next. (Nissan’s R35 production-end announcement; Skyline GT-R Registry)

Will the R35 ever be worth as much as an R34?

No available evidence can establish that it never will. The Australian auction sample records a substantial average-price gap at the time of the analysis, but it is limited to one market and a small number of sales per generation. It does not show future prices, nor does it isolate how much of the gap comes from generation, trim, condition, provenance or other factors.

“The R35 will never match the R34’s value” is therefore a collector-market thesis, not a measurable forecast. The R35 is also a discontinued model: Nissan announced the end of its production in 2025. That fact may shape future collector interest, but it does not, by itself, show that the R35 will appreciate or catch the R34. (Nissan Global Newsroom, August 26, 2025)

How to compare two specific cars fairly

To judge whether one listing or sale is genuinely stronger value than another, match the details that affect condition and collectability rather than relying on generation averages.

  • Variant: Compare like with like; different versions should not be treated as equivalent.
  • Originality: Check whether the car retains its original specification and components.
  • Condition and kilometres: Account for wear, maintenance needs and distance travelled.
  • History and provenance: Look for documented ownership, service and vehicle history.
  • Sale context: Compare completed sales from similar dates and markets, and distinguish them from asking prices.

AutoMarkets identifies variant, originality, condition, kilometres and history as price factors. Its warning that repairs on a poor car can exceed an apparent discount is especially relevant when comparing an inexpensive example with a better-documented one. The cited figures do not provide a trim-by-trim, condition-matched comparison, so they cannot establish a precise premium for any one specification. (AutoMarkets’ valuation factors)

Does the U.S. 25-year rule affect R34 prices?

It can matter to U.S. buyers considering imports, but it is not a general valuation rule. NHTSA says the federal safety-standard exemption for vehicles at least 25 years old is calculated from the vehicle’s manufacture date. In its interpretation of 49 U.S.C. 30112(b)(9), the agency states: “The 25-year period runs from the date of the vehicles manufacture.” A model year or a car’s first registration date is not a substitute for checking its manufacture date. This exemption concerns conformity with federal motor vehicle safety standards. It does not, by itself, settle emissions rules, customs requirements, state title or registration, or other import obligations. Buyers need to check those requirements separately for the specific vehicle and destination.

How much did a new 2024 GT-R cost in the U.S.?

Nissan USA’s 2023 release listed a starting MSRP of $131,090 for the 2024 GT-R Skyline Edition and $151,090 for the 2024 T-spec Takumi Edition. Those are new-car MSRPs for two specified 2024 editions, not current resale prices and not directly comparable with the Australian auction results above. (Nissan USA’s 2024 GT-R announcement)
