Queen’s music catalog was reportedly sold to Sony Music for £1 billion, about $1.27 billion at the exchange rate used in the June 2024 report. The reported package covered more than songwriting: it included recordings, royalty streams and certain name-and-likeness rights. The price and full terms have not been confirmed in a public Sony transaction announcement in the sources cited here.
Did Queen sell its music catalog to Sony?
In June 2024, Music Business Worldwide reported, citing Hits and sources, that Sony Music had emerged as the winning buyer for Queen’s recording and publishing rights. The report put the value at £1 billion, or roughly $1.27 billion using its exchange rate. Treat this as a reported transaction, not a price disclosed in an official Sony announcement or a publicly available definitive agreement confirming every term.

Sony later included Queen in an “Investing In Catalog” slide in its June 13, 2025 music presentation. That indicates a subsequent association with Queen in Sony’s catalog-investment material, but the presentation did not state the deal price or spell out the contract’s scope. Sony Group Corporation’s presentation therefore does not independently confirm all of the 2024 reporting.
What rights were reportedly included?
The June 2024 account described a package involving recording and publishing rights, royalties connected with earlier Disney Music Group and Universal Music Group deals, and name-and-likeness rights. MusicRadar’s contemporaneous report also described merchandise and other business opportunities as part of the reported scope. These are reported terms, not clauses verified against a public transaction document.

- Queen's greatest hits album takes listeners on a foot-stomping, fist-pumping journey through the iconic band's timeless catalogue of anthemic hits, showcasing the raw power and theatricality that made them one of the most legendary rock bands in history
The reporting also drew a line between catalog income and live performance: live-performance revenue was said to remain with Brian May and Roger Taylor. That distinction matters because an acquisition of recorded music, publishing or related commercial rights does not by itself mean the buyer receives the band’s touring income.
How did North American rights and distribution differ?
The reported arrangement was not an immediate, uniform transfer of every right and distribution role worldwide. Music Business Worldwide said Disney owned Queen’s recorded-music catalog in North America, while Universal, as distributor, would reportedly continue North American distribution and Sony would receive royalties. MusicRadar likewise reported that North American recorded rights would remain with Disney while royalties could flow to Sony.
For other territories, Music Business Worldwide reported that Universal’s worldwide distribution rights were expected to transfer to Sony when Universal’s agreement expired in 2026 or 2027. The precise timing was reported as dependent on that agreement’s expiry; the sources do not establish that Sony immediately took over exclusive worldwide distribution in 2024. Ownership, distribution and entitlement to royalties are separate parts of the reported structure.
What does the reported $1.27 billion price mean?
The £1 billion figure—about $1.27 billion at the exchange rate used in the June 2024 report—is a reported transaction value, not an officially disclosed Sony price in the sources cited here. It should not be read as an earnings multiple without caution: the package was reported to cover different revenue streams and rights across territories, while the financial figures below describe one company and one fiscal year.

Music Business Worldwide reported that Queen Productions Ltd recorded £39.47 million in revenue for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2023, equivalent to $49.1 million using the 2023 average exchange rate. It also reported £36.1 million in royalties for that fiscal year. Those are company financial figures, not a public breakdown of the sale’s valuation or a direct measure of the earnings Sony acquired.
Comparing the reported price with those figures is especially difficult because company revenue, royalties, territories, currencies and rights covered need not align. Music Business Worldwide cautioned that year-over-year royalty changes may not track consumption: Queen Productions’ figures are not adjusted for exchange-rate fluctuations, and much of the company’s revenue is international.

What did Queen Productions say about future income?
In figures reported by Music Business Worldwide on July 2, 2024, Queen Productions Ltd said: “Licensing fees on live music touring is expected to increase in the following year leading to an anticipation the company will generate similar income in [fiscal 2024] and in the years thereafter.” The statement is attributed to the company, not to a named individual, and speaks to its income outlook rather than confirming the Sony transaction’s price or terms.
