Intel executive Michelle Johnston Holthaus, meanwhile, described retailers as concerned that many Arm PCs were coming back because expected software did not work. Neither account supplies a measured return rate.
What did Qualcomm and Intel say about PC returns?
On December 13, 2024, CRN reported that Qualcomm issued its statement in response to remarks by Intel interim co-CEO Michelle Johnston Holthaus. Qualcomm told CRN: “Our devices continue to have greater than 4+ stars across consumer reviews and our products have received numerous accolades across the industry including awards from Fast Company, TechRadar, and many consumer publications. Our device return rates are within industry norm,” (CRN).
Holthaus said retailers’ “number one concern” about Arm PCs was that “a large percentage” were being returned because “the things that we just expect don’t work.” Her comment described concerns she said she heard from retailers; the report does not identify those retailers or provide their records. It also discussed Arm PCs generally, not only Snapdragon X models.
What are the actual Snapdragon X return rates?
The reported coverage does not state a percentage for Snapdragon X PC returns. It gives no retailer-level records, sample size, time period, or definition of “industry norm.” As a result, the reporting does not establish whether Qualcomm’s characterization or Holthaus’s account better reflects returns.

Qualcomm’s mention of consumer-review stars and awards does not supply return data. Its “greater than 4+ stars” wording is an unelaborated company statement, not a verified return-rate statistic. Tom’s Hardware repeated both sides of the dispute, but likewise did not provide a measured rate (Tom’s Hardware).
Why did software compatibility come up?
Qualcomm introduced Snapdragon X processors for the first Copilot+ PCs from Microsoft and other PC makers in June 2024. These Windows PCs use Arm processors. Some applications run natively on Arm, while x86 and x64 applications can run through emulation; not all Windows software was officially supported when the category launched, according to CRN.

Microsoft’s Windows 11 guidance, last updated June 25, 2026, says unmodified x86 and x64 apps can run on Arm devices through emulation. Microsoft recommends Arm-native apps for the best performance, responsiveness, and battery life, and advises checking compatibility for the specific app a person needs (Microsoft Learn: Apps on Windows 11 Arm-based PCs). This explains why compatibility may matter to a buyer, but it does not show what share of returns—if any—was caused by compatibility problems.

This story does not provide a basis for ranking Snapdragon X laptops against other PCs by return risk. Before choosing a particular laptop, check whether the applications and peripherals you rely on are supported on that model and whether they run natively or through emulation. For a concrete example, contemporaneous coverage identified Microsoft’s Surface Laptop (7th Edition) as a Snapdragon X-based PC; that identification says nothing about its return rate or the platform’s overall return behavior (Tom’s Hardware).
