The group—Apple, Best Buy, Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm and Supreme Electronics—accounted for approximately 14% of Samsung’s total sales for the quarter. That makes Qualcomm a significant disclosed customer, probably through Samsung Foundry manufacturing, but the filing does not prove that Qualcomm was Samsung’s “cash cow,” its most profitable customer or its largest account.
The event was reported on May 18, 2022, and relates to the quarter ended March 31, 2022. It should be read as a historical supply-chain development, not as a current 2026 customer ranking.

What Samsung actually disclosed
Samsung’s first-quarter 2022 business report named five major customers. Samsung presented the names as a group, not as a ranking, and did not publish an individual sales figure for Qualcomm.
| Reporting period | Named major customers | Combined share of Samsung sales |
|---|---|---|
| First quarter 2022 | Apple, Best Buy, Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm, Supreme Electronics | Approximately 14% |
| First half 2022 | Apple, Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm, Supreme Electronics, Verizon | Approximately 15% |
| Full year 2022 | Apple, Best Buy, Deutsche Telekom, Qualcomm, Verizon | Approximately 16% |
The later lists show that Qualcomm remained in Samsung’s disclosed major-customer group during 2022. They do not establish a permanent contract, a fixed rank or a specific percentage attributable to Qualcomm. Samsung also said that, as of March 31, 2022, it had no long-term contracts with a significant impact on its financial statements.

What Qualcomm was likely buying
Qualcomm primarily designs and sells semiconductor platforms; it generally uses external foundries to manufacture chips. Samsung Foundry is the manufacturing business within Samsung Electronics that produces chips for outside customers. Samsung’s System LSI business designs Samsung-branded chips, while Samsung Electronics also operates memory, display, smartphone and consumer-electronics businesses. Those divisions should not be treated as one interchangeable operation.
The most visible connection in this period was the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Contemporary reporting linked that platform to Samsung’s 4-nanometer process, although the cited reporting does not establish that Samsung made every chip in the product family. The defensible description is that Qualcomm was buying manufacturing services for at least some Qualcomm-designed chips, rather than buying finished Samsung phones or Samsung-branded processors.
Samsung’s official first-quarter results said its Foundry Business achieved its highest-ever first-quarter sales at that time, with solid demand across applications and increased sales from advanced processes. Samsung was also focused on improving advanced-node yields and profitability. Those comments explain why a large fabless chip customer could matter strategically even if it represented only a modest portion of the entire Samsung Electronics group.

Why “cash cow” is not established by the filing
In financial analysis, a cash cow usually means a mature, dependable business that produces substantial cash at attractive margins. A customer can be large in revenue but comparatively costly to serve, low-margin, temporary or exposed to renegotiation. Samsung’s disclosure provides none of the customer-level data needed to make that judgment.
- It does not report Qualcomm’s individual revenue contribution.
- It does not disclose Qualcomm-specific gross margin or operating profit.
- It does not identify Qualcomm’s cash-flow contribution, purchase commitments or contract duration.
- It does not say which Samsung division booked each sale.
The approximately 14% figure applies to all five named customers collectively. It is incorrect to attribute 14% of Samsung’s quarterly revenue to Qualcomm. Samsung reported consolidated first-quarter 2022 revenue of KRW 77.78 trillion and operating profit of KRW 14.12 trillion, but those figures cover the entire group and say nothing about Qualcomm’s profitability for Samsung.
Why Samsung wanted Qualcomm’s foundry business
Capacity utilization
Advanced semiconductor factories require enormous, continuing investment. External orders help Samsung use that capacity beyond chips made for its own device businesses. A major customer can therefore support factory economics even when it is not a dominant contributor to group revenue.

Process credibility
Winning production from a leading chip designer gives Samsung evidence that customers will entrust demanding products to its advanced nodes. That can help Samsung pursue additional mobile, high-performance-computing and automotive designs.

Customer diversification
Samsung has long competed with other leading foundries, especially TSMC. Qualcomm business supported Samsung’s effort to become a larger merchant foundry rather than relying mainly on internal Samsung demand. The trade-off is concentration risk: losing one large customer or product generation can leave expensive capacity underused.
Samsung later described its foundry strategy around advanced-node innovation, stable production, customer trust and expansion into broader applications. Its 2022 roadmap is outlined in the company’s Foundry Forum announcement.

Why Qualcomm used Samsung
For Qualcomm, Samsung offered access to an advanced manufacturing process and additional capacity outside any single supplier. A fabless chip company weighs several variables for each product generation:
- available wafer capacity and production timing;
- process performance and power characteristics;
- yield maturity and the resulting cost per usable chip;
- quality, scheduling and supply continuity; and
- the strategic value of maintaining more than one manufacturing option.
The 1Q22 disclosure does not reveal which of those factors determined Qualcomm’s specific purchasing decisions, nor does it prove that Qualcomm remained dependent on Samsung for later generations. Foundry sourcing can change with yields, prices, capacity, product requirements and supplier strategy.
How important was Qualcomm to Samsung Electronics?
Qualcomm could be strategically important to Samsung Foundry without dominating Samsung Electronics’ earnings. Samsung’s group includes large memory, mobile-device, display and consumer-electronics businesses, so a single foundry customer would need exceptionally large and profitable orders to become the group’s main cash generator.

The customer lists are also group-level disclosures. They do not isolate whether sales involved foundry wafers, components, finished devices or another Samsung business. The available evidence supports this sequence:
- Samsung identified Qualcomm as one of five major customers in 1Q22.
- Qualcomm’s foundry orders were a reasonable explanation for that significance, with Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 production associated in contemporary reporting with Samsung’s 4nm process.
- Samsung did not disclose enough customer-level financial information to calculate Qualcomm’s profit or cash contribution.
What changed—and what did not
Qualcomm’s appearance in the first-quarter list was a meaningful change in Samsung’s disclosed customer mix for that reporting period. Verizon was not in that particular five-name list, but later first-half and full-year 2022 reports included both Qualcomm and Verizon. That pattern does not support a claim that Qualcomm permanently replaced Verizon or that Samsung’s customer hierarchy was fixed.
Nor does inclusion in a major-customer list establish a long-term supply agreement. Samsung’s own filing cautioned that no long-term contracts had a significant financial-statement impact as of March 31, 2022.

The accurate story is that Qualcomm became a top-five disclosed Samsung customer in the first quarter of 2022, most plausibly because Samsung Foundry manufactured some Qualcomm-designed chips on an advanced process. That relationship helped Samsung validate and utilize its foundry capacity and gave Qualcomm another advanced manufacturing source.
Calling Qualcomm Samsung Electronics’ “cash cow” goes beyond the evidence. Samsung disclosed a combined sales share for five customers, not Qualcomm’s revenue, margin or cash flow. “Significant foundry customer” is supported; “most profitable customer” and “cash cow” are not.
