Qualcomm announced on December 10, 2025, that it had acquired Ventana Micro Systems, a company developing high-performance RISC-V chiplets. Qualcomm says Ventana’s expertise will strengthen its CPU engineering and complement both its RISC-V efforts and its custom Oryon CPU development. The announcement did not name a resulting product or give a launch timetable.

Why did Qualcomm acquire Ventana?

Qualcomm’s stated reason is to add Ventana’s RISC-V instruction-set expertise to its CPU engineering work. In the acquisition announcement, Qualcomm Technologies said the Ventana team would complement its ongoing RISC-V work and custom Oryon CPU development. Qualcomm executive Durga Malladi described the deal as a step toward delivering RISC-V-based CPU technology across products.

Ventana, founded in 2018 and headquartered in Cupertino according to Qualcomm’s announcement, described its work as developing high-performance, extensible and secure compute chiplets based on RISC-V’s open architecture. The announcement describes strategic intent; it does not establish that a particular Ventana chiplet will be used in a Qualcomm product.

What RISC-V means in Qualcomm’s strategy

RISC-V is an open instruction-set architecture: the defined set of instructions a processor is designed to execute. Qualcomm’s 2023 explanation says its flexibility can let designers customize processors for goals such as power, performance or area. Those are Qualcomm’s descriptions of the architecture’s potential, not measured outcomes for a Ventana-derived product.

Dual-band Wi-Fi 5 (2.4/5 GHz), Bluetooth 5.1, and high-speed headers for vision, audio, and display peripherals.
  • Seamless Expansion & Connectivity: Features the classic UNO form factor for shields compatibility, an 8x13 LED matrix, and a Qwiic connector for easy expansion with Modulino nodes; power and connect via the USB-C connector.
  • Intended Use & Development: The perfect platform for prototyping robotics or IoT projects, empowering innovators with a unified development experience to mix Arduino Sketches, Python scripts, and containerized AI models in a single interface.

Qualcomm’s RISC-V involvement predates the acquisition. In 2023, Qualcomm executive Ziad Asghar said the company had integrated RISC-V into products since 2019. Qualcomm also reported in 2023 that it had shipped more than 650 million RISC-V cores to date; that is the company’s own figure, not an independently verified industry total.

The company has also described ecosystem work as part of its approach. In 2023, Qualcomm said its participation in RISE supported areas including compilers, toolchains, system libraries, Linux and kernel integration, virtualization, firmware, and debugging and simulation tools. Such software and tooling help developers build and support systems using an architecture; Qualcomm’s description does not establish that every tool is specific to Ventana or that a new consumer product is imminent.

How Ventana relates to Oryon

Qualcomm has not presented the acquisition as a replacement for Oryon. Its announcement says the Ventana team will complement Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU development and RISC-V work. Ventana CEO Balaji Baktha said at the time that the team would contribute its RISC-V expertise to development of Qualcomm’s Oryon CPU technology.

That statement connects Ventana’s expertise with Oryon, but it is not a detailed architecture or product roadmap. The sources reviewed do not specify how Qualcomm will divide work between RISC-V and Oryon, whether particular future processors will use either approach, or which markets they might target. It would be premature to treat the deal as proof that Oryon will switch instruction sets or that Qualcomm will sell a standalone RISC-V processor.

What Qualcomm has not announced

  • Purchase price or other consideration: Qualcomm’s acquisition announcement and its FY2026 first-quarter earnings presentation do not state financial terms.
  • A named Ventana-based product: The sources reviewed do not identify a retail processor, development board or other specific product resulting from the deal.
  • A release date: Qualcomm has not provided a product launch schedule for Ventana-related work in those sources.
  • Commercial or performance outcomes: The announcement explains Qualcomm’s rationale, but does not demonstrate future product performance or commercial success.

These omissions do not prove that Qualcomm has no internal product plans. They mean only that the reviewed company materials do not disclose those details.

What the acquisition means for consumers and investors

For consumers, the acquisition is a development in processor engineering rather than a product announcement: there is no named Ventana-derived device to evaluate or buy based on the company statements cited here. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon said at Investor Day in November 2024, before the acquisition, that RISC-V development and commercialization “will take time.” That comment is historical context, not a post-acquisition schedule.

For investors, the announcement signals Qualcomm’s stated interest in building RISC-V capability alongside its existing CPU work. It does not disclose deal economics, forecast revenue, or establish the financial contribution of future RISC-V products. The company’s strategic rationale should therefore be distinguished from any conclusion about the acquisition’s eventual business impact.
