What Qatar Airways ordered—and what it cancelled
Boeing announced on July 21, 2022, that Qatar Airways had finalized an order for 25 737 MAX aircraft, specifying the 737-10 variant and saying the aircraft were intended for short- and medium-haul operations. Boeing’s announcement establishes the firm order as 25 aircraft.
When reporting the cancellation in May 2025, Air Data News described the original arrangement as 25 firm orders plus options for 25 more. An option is not a firm aircraft order, so it would be inaccurate to say Qatar Airways had 50 737 MAX 10s firmly on order. Air Data News reported the CEO’s cancellation confirmation and the order breakdown.
Why the cancellation followed a change in the Airbus dispute
The 737-10 order was placed while Qatar Airways was in a dispute with Airbus. The dispute was settled, and the airline’s A321neo agreement was reinstated before the cancellation was confirmed. AirlineGeeks reported the settlement context.

There had been an earlier indication that Qatar Airways was reconsidering the aircraft. In December 2024, Gulf News, citing Bloomberg, reported the airline wanted to remove the 737-10 from its order book because it no longer met fleet requirements. A possible switch to smaller 737 MAX 8s was under consideration at that time—not a completed replacement order. Gulf News’ December 2024 report described that earlier stage.
The 2025 Boeing widebody deal was separate
On May 14, 2025, Boeing and Qatar Airways announced an agreement for up to 210 widebody aircraft. Boeing called it its largest widebody order and Qatar Airways’ largest-ever order. That agreement was separate from the cancelled narrowbody 737 MAX arrangement; it was not a replacement aircraft type within that order. Boeing’s announcement gives the widebody deal’s scope.

What is—and is not—known about the financial impact
The available reports do not establish a cancellation fee, the contract value of the 737 MAX arrangement, or a quantified financial or operational impact for Qatar Airways. The confirmed order count and the separate widebody announcement do not provide a basis for estimating any of those amounts.
