The airline uses a piece allowance on flights to or from Africa and the Americas, and generally a weight allowance on other routes; your booking confirmation or the airline’s Manage Booking page is the best source for the allowance on your specific itinerary. Partner-operated flights, exceptions and membership benefits can change what applies.
What is Qatar Airways’ baggage allowance?
Checked baggage is included, but the permitted amount varies by route and cabin class. The following Economy examples are published on Qatar Airways’ New Zealand baggage allowance page; they are not a substitute for the allowance shown for your own booking.
| Route group | Economy fare | Published checked baggage example |
|---|---|---|
| To or from Africa or the Americas | Lite | 1 piece, up to 23 kg |
| To or from Africa or the Americas | Other listed Economy fares | 2 pieces, up to 23 kg each |
| Other destinations | Lite | 20 kg |
| Other destinations | Classic | 25 kg |
| Other destinations | Convenience | 30 kg |
| Other destinations | Comfort | 35 kg |
Exceptions may apply. On weight-based routes, the page says there is no piece-count limit as long as the total weight stays within the allowance. On piece-based routes, each piece is subject to the stated piece allowance and size limit. Any individual checked piece must weigh no more than 32 kg.
Checked-bag size limits
- Africa and Americas routes: Up to 158 cm total dimensions per piece.
- Other routes: Up to 300 cm total dimensions.
- All routes: No checked piece may exceed 32 kg.
Qatar Airways says items larger than the applicable size maximum may need to travel as cargo. Irregular objects with loose ropes or straps, or wrapped in blankets, are not accepted as checked baggage. Check the airline’s allowance rules for the itinerary-specific details.

How many bags can I take on Qatar Airways?
There is no single bag count that applies to every Qatar Airways itinerary. The allowance may be stated as a number of pieces or as a total weight, depending on the route group, and fare family affects the amount. Use the booking confirmation or Manage Booking to check your exact allowance rather than applying an example fare table to a different journey.
Also check whether any segment is operated by a partner airline. Qatar Airways says the IATA Most Significant Marketing Carrier rule determines baggage allowances on code-share routes. For code-share or interline itineraries beginning or ending in the United States or Canada, the baggage allowance and charges applying at the itinerary origin apply throughout. Partner-carrier rules can otherwise differ, so review the confirmation and the other carrier’s baggage details. See Qatar Airways’ baggage information for guidance.

What is the Qatar Airways carry-on weight limit?
The published standard cabin allowance is one item weighing up to 7 kg, with maximum dimensions of 50 × 37 × 25 cm. The allowance page lists a 10 kg Economy exception for travel to or from Brazil. Confirm the rule for your route and fare in your booking details.
Qatar Airways lists some additional personal items, including a small purse or briefcase, an umbrella, a walking stick or crutches, and limited reading material. A laptop bag carried separately counts as carry-on baggage. A suitcase that meets the size ceiling may still exceed the weight limit once packed, so check both measurements and weight.

Does Qatar Airways charge for extra baggage?
Extra baggage is available for purchase, subject to space limits at check-in. Online extra-baggage purchases are valid only for Qatar Airways direct flights; passengers on interline or code-share itineraries should check the other carriers’ rules. The price and applicable baggage concept depend on the trip, and rates can change, so check the live offer for your booking rather than relying on a general price.
How Qatar Airways handles sports equipment
Sports equipment can count toward the ticketed checked-baggage allowance if it meets the applicable weight and size limits. Items beyond that allowance may qualify for the airline’s separate sports equipment allowance. Qatar Airways publishes different rate structures for Africa/Americas routes and other destinations; its advance rates apply when purchased up to six hours before departure. Check the current rate for your route on the sports equipment page.

Packing rules for sports gear
- Partially deflate sports balls so they contain no more than 70% of their air capacity.
- Make sure diving cylinders are empty. Pack the regulator and dive computer in carry-on baggage.
- Pad trekking equipment bags and ensure no sharp edges protrude.
- Certain sharp trekking items, fuel and camping stoves are not permitted in carry-on baggage; check the airline’s current restrictions before packing.
Musical instruments and mobility aids
Musical instruments
Musical instruments may be included in the checked-baggage allowance. If an instrument exceeds the applicable weight or dimensions, you may purchase extra baggage. Qatar Airways allows fragile instruments in the cabin if you buy the seat they occupy. The airline’s published maximum for an instrument on a seat is 75 kg and 120 cm; up to three extra seats per passenger may be available, subject to aircraft configuration. Advance notice and permission are required under Qatar Airways’ Conditions of Carriage, which say delicate items unsuitable for the cargo compartment may be carried in the cabin only when notice has been given and permission granted.
Wheelchairs and mobility aids
Qatar Airways says passengers’ wheelchairs and mobility aids are carried at no extra cost. Tell the airline about the equipment and its battery details. Battery-powered wheelchairs are accepted as checked baggage, but equipment with a damaged or leaking battery is not accepted. See the airline’s special assistance information and contact it ahead of travel if you need to confirm how your equipment will be handled.
