Canelo vs. Crawford Purses: What Reports Estimated—and What’s Unverified

BBC Sport reported an estimated $150 million for Canelo Alvarez and at least $10 million for Terence Crawford, but later reporting disputed commonly circulated figures. No authenticated final payouts are public in the reviewed sources.

Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford fought on September 13, 2025, and Crawford won by unanimous decision. Published estimates of their purses vary sharply: BBC Sport reported an estimated $150 million for Alvarez and at least $10 million for Crawford, while a later Guardian account said widely circulated estimates of $100 million and $50 million, respectively, were likely too high. None of those figures is an authenticated final payout.

What did reports estimate Canelo and Crawford would receive?

BBC Sport’s September 14, 2025 live coverage reported an estimated $150 million for Canelo Alvarez and at least $10 million for Terence Crawford. It also said the total purse pot was expected to top $200 million. BBC explicitly cautioned that purses are “pretty impossible to verify” and told readers to take the figures “with a pinch of salt.” Read BBC Sport’s report.

A September 20 Guardian retrospective offered a different picture: it described reports of $100 million for Alvarez and $50 million for Crawford as “a bit high.” It said Alvarez’s compensation was understood to combine purse money with payment for serving as a Riyadh Season ambassador and for other services. The account did not disclose a contract or a reconciled breakdown. Read The Guardian’s account.

Source and date Alvarez figure Crawford figure What the report says
BBC Sport, September 14, 2025 Estimated $150 million At least $10 million Reported total purse pot expected to top $200 million; BBC warned the figures were difficult to verify.
The Guardian, September 20, 2025 Reported $100 million described as “a bit high” Reported $50 million also believed high Alvarez’s compensation was described as including purse money, ambassador payment, and other services; no contract figures were published.

Why do the reported figures conflict?

The reports may be counting different things: a guaranteed fight purse, a minimum, broader compensation for services, or an event-wide pot. That is a plausible explanation for the mismatch, not a confirmed accounting of this event. The sources do not supply a shared definition or contract records that would allow the estimates to be compared on equal terms.

Do not add the individual figures to the reported total pot or average estimates from different accounts. Neither method resolves what the numbers include, and no source provides a verified final ledger. The Guardian reported that Turki Alalshikh called the deal “the most expensive boxing contract ever”; that is his characterization as reported by the newspaper, not an independently established ranking.

What is—and isn’t—known about the fighters’ actual pay?

The exact final contract amounts are not established in the reviewed public reporting. Nor do the reports document a complete split among official purse, bonuses, ambassador or other service payments, taxes, management fees, and net take-home pay. There is no basis here for saying either boxer definitively “earned” one of the quoted estimates as a settled amount.

For personal-finance purposes, the key distinction is between a reported gross compensation estimate and money ultimately kept. Even a confirmed gross figure would not, by itself, establish after-tax income. No reviewed source provides authenticated final payouts or either fighter’s net earnings.

How big was the event apart from the purse estimates?

Associated Press reported 70,482 announced attendees, a venue record, and a $47.23 million gate gross. The gate is event revenue from ticket sales, not either fighter’s purse. AP’s fight report also records the unanimous-decision result.

The Saudi Press Agency, relaying Netflix figures, reported more than 41 million global viewers. That audience figure is not a measure of subscriptions, event revenue, or fighter compensation.
