Qantas’s Project Sunrise aircraft are in development testing, not yet carrying passengers on the planned nonstop routes. Airbus’s first A350-1000ULR, MSN 707, made its first flight on 2 June 2026; Qantas currently expects its first aircraft, named Vega, to be delivered in April 2027. The airline plans Sydney–London service from October 2027 and Sydney–New York service from mid-2028, subject to change.
When does Qantas Project Sunrise start?
Qantas’s current plan is to begin daily nonstop Sydney–London flights in October 2027, followed by Sydney–New York flights from mid-2028. The airline has announced planned ticket-sale dates of February 2027 for London and August 2027 for New York. These are future plans, not services currently available to book; check Qantas’s Project Sunrise page for any updates.

Qantas has not published a final scheduled flight duration in the cited route announcement. Airbus describes the aircraft as intended for flights of up to 22 hours, while the development program included a customer-flight target of 21 hours 40 minutes. Those figures are design and test references, not a confirmed timetable for either route.
What is the latest on the A350-1000ULR?
Airbus’s first production A350-1000ULR, manufacturer serial number 707, completed its first flight on 2 June 2026. Airbus reported that the three-hour-43-minute flight reached slightly above 41,000 feet and checked general aircraft performance and the revised fuel-system architecture. The aircraft then entered a two-month campaign to test modifications, including fuel-system work, cabin ventilation and temperature control, and galley air cooling. Airbus said MSN 707 would be retrofitted to Qantas’s commercial specification after test work; a first flight is not a delivery or a passenger service.

Airbus subsequently reported long-range development testing, including a Toulouse–Melbourne flight and a return to Toulouse that arrived on 28 July 2026. Airbus test pilot Xavier Pepin said the long-range missions helped complete remaining tests of the rear centre tank and cabin comfort. Airbus reported that his longest flight covered 12,460 nautical miles and lasted 24 hours and 24 minutes. That was a development flight, not a scheduled passenger journey or evidence that the commercial timetable will last 24 hours.
How the ULR is designed for very long flights
Airbus says the A350-1000ULR adds a rear centre tank (RCT) and revised fuel system to extend the aircraft’s range by about 1,000 nautical miles. Airbus’s June 2026 technical description rounded the tank capacity to 20,000 litres; its July flight-test account gave a more specific capacity of 20,900 litres. Airbus says the aircraft is designed for routes nearing 10,000 nautical miles and flight times of up to 22 hours. The modifications remain subject to certification by the European Union Aviation Safety Agency before entry into service.

Airbus says the July testing included a mission intended to demonstrate capability for a 23-hour block-time flight. Pepin described that profile as covering a planned customer flight time of 21 hours 40 minutes plus taxiing, holding and diversion allowance. It is a test-program target, not a published Qantas schedule.
The ULRs are one part of a larger Qantas order: the airline ordered 12 A350-1000ULRs for Project Sunrise and a separate 12 standard A350-1000s for its broader long-haul network. The two groups should not be confused: the Project Sunrise aircraft are the specially modified ULRs.

What passengers can expect from the planned cabin
Airbus describes a planned 238-seat, four-class cabin: six First Class Suites, 52 Business Suites, 40 Premium Economy seats and 140 Economy seats. Airbus lists 33-inch seat pitch in Economy. Qantas says a dedicated wellbeing zone is intended to provide space for movement and premium refreshments, and says the cabin was designed with the University of Sydney’s Charles Perkins Centre.
These are announced cabin specifications and design aims, not independently established comfort results or findings from passenger trials. Qantas lists the aircraft at 72.25 metres long; Airbus says the test aircraft uses two Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-97 engines.

What is confirmed—and what remains a plan
- Confirmed test milestone: MSN 707 flew for the first time on 2 June 2026 and went into modification testing.
- Current delivery expectation: Qantas identifies its first aircraft as Vega and expects delivery in April 2027.
- Announced route plans: Sydney–London is planned from October 2027 and Sydney–New York from mid-2028, with ticket-sale dates announced for February and August 2027 respectively.
- Not yet established: the sources cited here do not provide a final published flight timetable, operating economics, or results from independent passenger-comfort trials.
Airbus’s June 2026 announcement described the second aircraft as the one then scheduled for delivery in April 2027.
