He lost his 2024 reelection bid; a 2026 Georgetown University profile describes his post-Senate work as political analysis, podcasting and policy consulting. Details about his crops and policy views below come from a 2020 interview and should be read in that timeframe.
Who is Jon Tester?
Tester is a Montana farmer and former U.S. senator. He served in the Senate from 2007 to 2025. The title of the 2020 Successful Farming Q&A spells his first name “John”; his name is Jon Tester.
In a 2026 spring profile, Georgetown University’s Institute of Politics and Public Service identifies him as an MSNBC political analyst, co-host of the podcast Grounded with Jon Tester and Maritsa Georgiou, and a policy consultant. These are the roles listed in that profile, rather than a claim that he holds a Senate seat.
Does Jon Tester still farm?
Tester has described himself as a working farmer while serving in the Senate. In the 2020 interview, he said: “I believe strongly in the model of the citizen legislature that our framers set up, so I get back to Montana and farm every weekend.” That is a statement from his Senate years, not a current schedule.

Georgetown’s 2026 profile says Tester and his wife, Sharla, farm land near Big Sandy, Montana, tied to his grandparents’ 1910 homestead. In December 2024, Senator Susan Collins also said on the Senate floor: “With his wife Sharla, JON still farms the land near Big Sandy, MT, that has been in his family for more than a century.” The Congressional Record attributes that description to Collins.
What did Tester grow on the farm?
In the 2020 interview, Tester said he and Sharla had converted their farm to organic agriculture more than 30 years earlier. He listed several varieties of wheat, barley, safflower, peas and lentils as crops they grew at that time. The interview does not establish what the farm grows today, so this is a historical crop list rather than a current inventory.

What did Tester say about rural America and agriculture in 2020?
Successful Farming interviewed Tester on April 24, 2020, during the Trump administration. His answers reflected that period’s policy debates, including a proposed federal budget. They are useful as a record of what he said then, not as confirmation of his present positions.
Rural broadband and precision agriculture
Tester argued that rural communities needed reliable service before policymakers focused on the next generation of wireless technology. He linked connectivity to precision agriculture and said: “5G is absolutely critical for rural America if we’re going to have precision agriculture.” The interview’s context was his concern that some rural areas still lacked 4G or any service.

Farm safety nets and disaster costs
Discussing proposed budget cuts, Tester defended crop insurance, conservation programs and farm assistance as important supports for production agriculture. He also connected climate change with agricultural disaster costs. In that interview, he cited $4.5 billion in taxpayer-funded disaster payments to producers in the prior year and characterized the amount as more than 20% of USDA discretionary spending. Those are figures he reported in 2020, not current spending totals.
Farmer mental health
Tester described the Seedling Rural Resilience Act as a proposal for voluntary mental-health training for USDA employees who work with farmers, efforts to reduce stigma, and a task force focused on farm and ranch stress. This summarizes his account of the proposed bill in the 2020 interview; it is not a description of a current program.
