Jeff Hansen founded Iowa Select Farms with his wife, Deb, after years of raising pigs and developing hog-farm equipment. The company says it began in 1992; a 2017 interview gives 1993, so the exact founding year differs by source. In that interview, Hansen described his work then as including financing, environmental matters and the company’s relationship with its packer.
Who is Jeff Hansen?
Jeff Hansen is the founder and owner of Iowa Select Farms, a family-owned Iowa pork-production company. The company identifies both Jeff and Deb Hansen as its owners. In a 2017 interview with Successful Farming, Hansen described Iowa Select as a family business: “This is a family business.”
The company’s About page describes Iowa Select Farms as a live-production business, with a mission to responsibly produce safe, nutritious, high-quality pork. Those are the company’s own descriptions.
How did Hansen build the business?
According to the company’s account, Jeff and Deb Hansen began raising pigs in 1976. They converted an old barn into a farrowing facility and started with three sows. Hansen later developed raised decks for sows and founded Modern Hog Concepts, an equipment-supply company, before establishing Iowa Select Farms.

The company says Iowa Select Farms started in 1992 with 10,000 sows. The biography accompanying the 2017 interview instead says the Hansens founded it with 10,000 sows in 1993. The company’s current published history uses 1992; the interview’s biography is evidence of the conflicting date, not a resolution of it.
What did Hansen do at Iowa Select Farms?
In the 2017 interview, Hansen said his responsibilities included financing, environmental issues and the company’s packer relationship. The interview described then-COO Noel Williams as running production and, essentially, the company. That account reflects the arrangement reported in 2017; it should not be read as a description of the company’s current management.
The interview also named Hansen’s son, daughter and son-in-law as involved in the business at that time. A separate 2023 SelectCare report identifies Jeff Hansen as president and CEO for the report period. That dated title does not establish his current role.
How large is Iowa Select Farms?
Iowa Select Farms’ current About page, crawled October 8, 2026, says the company operates farms in 55 Iowa counties and markets over five million hogs annually. These are company-reported figures, not independently verified counts in the sources cited here.

The 2017 interview’s headline deck said the company expected its sow count to reach 200,000 by that fall. That was a projection made in 2017, not a current sow count. The interview also described expansion activity and a recently opened 6,250-sow farm near Derby, Iowa; those details concern that historical period.
