He described a career supporting game creators, explained why he wanted to invest directly in them, and shared his views on how technology and player communities could shape gaming. The interview captures his outlook at that time; it does not establish his current role or whether his forecasts came to pass.
Why Gwertzman joined a16z
GeekWire reported that Gwertzman was joining a16z’s consumer investing team as a general partner focused on games, and would be the firm’s first Seattle-based GP. He said he planned to leave Microsoft at the end of November 2021 and stay in Seattle.
A mutual friend who served on Roblox’s board introduced him to a16z. Gwertzman said the opportunity felt like a natural next step after more than two decades supporting game creators: rather than building tools and services for studios, he could help them by investing directly. As he put it, “And becoming a GP at a16z, focused on games, is the ultimate form of empowering game creators — to directly invest in their success.”
The interview also noted that a16z had added Riot Games’ Jon Lai to its gaming investment effort. Earlier that week, the firm had led a $5 million financing round for Seattle blockchain-gaming startup Irreverent Labs. These details describe the firm’s activity reported in November 2021, not its current team or portfolio.

A career built around game creators
Gwertzman’s path combined studio leadership, game-development infrastructure, and work inside a large technology company. GeekWire reported two acquisition milestones: Sprout Games was sold to PopCap in 2005, and PlayFab was acquired by Microsoft in 2018.
After the PlayFab acquisition, Gwertzman led Microsoft’s business serving game companies. In the interview, he said his team was working to make Microsoft the game industry’s cloud platform of choice. He said PlayFab worked with thousands of studios and hosted billions of player profiles, including profiles associated with Minecraft, Roblox, and PUBG. Those scale figures are his statements as quoted by GeekWire in 2021, not independently substantiated statistics in the interview.

His 2021 view of where gaming was headed
Games as ongoing communities
Gwertzman saw games increasingly as persistent communities rather than one-time releases. In his view, a successful game could keep players engaged over time and create continuing opportunities to serve and monetize that community. This was his investment thesis in 2021, not a measured conclusion about every game or the market as a whole.
Technology changing how games are made
He pointed to artificial intelligence and machine learning as tools that could enable new kinds of content, more intelligent characters, and larger game worlds. Summing up his perspective, he said: “I’m seeing unprecedented innovation not just in gameplay, but also in how games get built.”

Crypto gaming and new entrants
Gwertzman also said crypto gaming was attracting new people and ideas. The interview records his observation at the time; it does not establish current adoption, long-term viability, or the success of any particular crypto game.
Gaming ideas beyond games
He expected technologies and practices developed for games to spread into other industries. The interview presents this as part of his broader thesis about gaming’s influence, rather than evidence that a particular technology had already achieved widespread use elsewhere.

Why he thought geography mattered less
Gwertzman argued that remote conversations could make a founder’s location less important to an investor, while gaming talent was distributed across many places. His point was that a game-focused investor could meet and support founders without requiring them to be based near a traditional technology hub. This describes his view in the 2021 interview, not a claim that geography never affects fundraising or company-building.
