His comments on supply chains and sustainability targets belong to that moment, not to AGCO’s current operating picture.
Who is Eric Hansotia?
AGCO currently lists Hansotia as its Chairman, President and CEO. The company says he took the role in 2021 after serving as COO, joined AGCO in 2013 following a 20-year career at Deere, and holds mechanical engineering degrees from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and an MBA from the University of Iowa. The Q&A discussed here was published by Successful Farming on September 8, 2021, around a Fendt machinery launch in Wisconsin. Read it as a historical interview rather than a current status report. Read the 2021 interview
What did Hansotia say AGCO was doing during the pandemic?
Hansotia described a shift toward virtual work and farmer contact, alongside factory safety measures, remote monitoring, and support intended to help farmers keep operating. He also discussed supply-chain constraints, but those remarks reflect the conditions of 2021 and should not be taken as a description of AGCO’s supply situation today.

He framed farmer engagement as central to the company’s approach: “When I’m around a farmer, I like to listen more than talk.” He also said, “We intend to be the most farmer-focused company in the industry.” Both statements describe his stated intent in that interview, not an independent assessment of how the company performs.
What did he mean by “smart machines” and autonomy?
Hansotia’s main technology theme was smart machines: equipment that senses changing field conditions, processes information onboard, and can automate specific tasks. In his account, task automation could help a broader range of farmers, while full autonomy was a later and more limited use case—not an immediate assumption about every machine.

A 2023 follow-up interview also discussed automating tasks before moving to fully driverless operation. These are Hansotia’s strategic views, not confirmation that any particular feature is available across AGCO’s current machines. 2021 interview · 2023 follow-up interview
SmartFirmer as an example
Hansotia pointed to Precision Planting SmartFirmer as an example of sensing tied to machine adjustments. In the 2021 interview, he said it takes over 2 million measurements an acre and can make over 8,000 adjustments an acre. Those are figures attributed to Hansotia by Successful Farming at the time; they have not been established here as current product specifications. The interview does not establish current equipment compatibility, price, or availability.

How does the interview compare with AGCO’s current precision-ag strategy?
AGCO’s current materials describe PTx as a mixed-fleet precision-ag portfolio drawing on Precision Planting, PTx Trimble, and other technology acquisitions. The company describes the portfolio as including retrofit options for mixed fleets as well as technology through original-equipment channels. Its chairman’s message says PTx introduced 14 products in 2025 and that FarmerCore supports digital customer interactions and more on-farm service capacity. AGCO chairman’s message
For a farmer comparing options, the practical distinction is not simply “smart” versus “autonomous.” It is whether the technology can be retrofitted to existing equipment or comes through an original-equipment channel, what task it handles, which equipment it supports, and where it fits in the crop cycle. The interview’s task-automation framing helps separate precision functions from the more demanding goal of fully driverless operation.
Rank #4
AGCO’s chairman’s message also sets company targets of a 14–15% mid-cycle adjusted operating margin and growth 4–5% faster than the industry. These are targets stated by the company, not independent forecasts or guaranteed results.
What later product announcements show
In an August 2026 announcement about its Farm Progress Show exhibit, AGCO named new Fendt and Massey Ferguson products alongside PTx offerings, including Massey Ferguson N-Series Split/Narrow Row Planters, Precision Planting ArrowTube, and Precision Planting SymphonyVision | Duo camera-based spraying. The announcement is a dated indication of how the portfolio evolved after the 2021 interview; it does not establish availability in every region. AGCO’s August 2026 announcement

What did Hansotia say about sustainability?
Hansotia connected AGCO’s own operational footprint with farming practices, carbon sequestration, and the role of sensors. In the 2021 interview, he reported that 42% of energy used through AGCO facilities was renewable and set a target of more than 60% within five years. Those are historical figures and a historical target as reported in 2021; they do not establish current performance or whether the target was met.
Quick Recap
What the interview does—and does not—tell readers
- It records Hansotia’s pandemic-era account of farmer engagement, operational responses, and supply-chain pressure.
- It explains his strategy of automating specific machine tasks and improving precision before treating full autonomy as the near-term norm.
- It gives SmartFirmer as a concrete example, with performance figures attributed to Hansotia in 2021 rather than verified as current specifications.
- It is not a current product catalog, compatibility guide, sustainability report, or assessment of AGCO’s present supply conditions.
- For current leadership and portfolio context, AGCO’s dated corporate materials provide the more recent information.
