Emily Schmitt is a third-generation member of the Sukup family who joined the grain-equipment manufacturer full-time in 2011. Sukup announced her promotion to chief administrative officer and general counsel in 2022; the company’s executive-team page currently lists her in both roles. In a 2021 interview with Natalina Sents Bausch for Agriculture.com and Successful Farming, Schmitt described how growing up around the business shaped her path from law school to company leadership.
Who is Emily Schmitt?
Schmitt is the granddaughter of Sukup founder Eugene Sukup and the daughter of Steve Sukup, who was the company’s president and CEO when the 2021 interview appeared. She grew up around the family business in Sheffield, Iowa, and recalls walking to the office after school to help with print-room work and other tasks. She described employees as people who felt like family and said she works alongside her husband and other relatives.
In the interview, Schmitt also connected the family’s presence in the company to its customers, many of whom run family farms. That is her account of how family involvement resonates with customers, rather than a general claim about every customer or business relationship.
How did she come to work at Sukup?
Schmitt began working at Sukup part-time before joining full-time in May 2011. She studied business management at Iowa State University and earned a Juris Doctor with high honors from the University of Iowa College of Law, according to Sukup’s executive-team biography.

She had expected to become a lawyer, but ultimately wanted to bring that training to her family’s company. As she put it in the 2021 interview: “Once I got through law school, I figured if I was going to be a corporate lawyer, I wanted to do it for our company.” Before taking on wider leadership responsibilities, her work touched human resources, finance and taxes.

Sukup announced Schmitt’s promotion to chief administrative officer and general counsel on June 2, 2022. The company said she would lead legal, human resources, communications, strategic planning and other administrative functions. Its executive-team page currently lists her with both titles; executive titles and responsibilities can change over time.

That account predates her 2022 promotion and should not be treated as a complete statement of her current day-to-day duties.
What does the interview reveal about Sukup’s family-business culture?
Schmitt’s account is personal rather than a formal description of company policy: she remembers doing small jobs in the office as a child, and describes a workplace where relatives and long-standing employees worked together. Her examples show how family ties and company life overlapped for her, from her early visits to the Sheffield office to working alongside her husband and other family members as an adult.

She also described the company changing as its product lines and technology developed. One example she gave in 2021 was the QuadraTouch dryer control, which she said could let a user text a dryer and receive a text back. That is an example from the interview, not a current product specification. Sukup’s July 2024 company article places Schmitt’s leadership role in the broader context of the firm’s agricultural technology and innovation.

She said 70% of office staff worked remotely in March, office occupancy was kept at about 50%, and the company used employee communications measures and an onsite clinic. These are historical statements about the period she discussed, not claims about current workplace arrangements or policy.
