A psychology degree can lead to work in more than one field, but the degree level matters: a bachelor’s degree can prepare you for some psychology-related roles or further study, while independent practice as a licensed psychologist commonly requires a doctorate, supervised experience, and other jurisdiction-specific requirements. If you are weighing the degree as a financial and career decision, compare the training required for your intended job with the program’s total cost, time to completion, and graduate outcomes—not just its name.

What can you do with a psychology degree?

Psychology is a broad behavioral science, not a commitment to become a psychologist. Its study can build knowledge of behavior, development, research methods, and statistics that is relevant to a range of work. Your options depend on the degree you earn, the skills and experience you gain, and any additional credentials required for a particular occupation.

The American Psychological Association (APA) uses three broad categories to describe pathways for psychology bachelor’s graduates. Its 2023 undergraduate guidelines report an analysis based on National Science Foundation data covering 3.7 million psychology bachelor’s graduates:

APA pathway category Reported share What the figure means
Careers that may begin with a bachelor’s degree 57% A broad pathway category, not a promise of a job, placement rate, or current count of openings.
Professions requiring graduate degrees in psychology 14% A broad category for graduates whose pathway involves graduate study in psychology.
Other professions requiring graduate degrees 29% A broad category for graduate-level professions outside the first graduate-degree category.

These figures describe categories in APA’s pathway analysis, not the probability that an individual graduate will get a particular job. The guideline was published in 2023 and identifies the underlying dataset as APA 2021 data. APA’s recommendation is that psychology graduates be prepared for work related to psychology whether they enter the workforce after undergraduate study or continue to graduate or professional school. Read the APA Guidelines for the Undergraduate Psychology Major.

What does each degree level prepare you for?

Bachelor’s degree

A psychology bachelor’s program commonly covers introductory psychology, research methods and statistics, as well as areas such as developmental, social, personality, abnormal, biological, and learning psychology. APA treats workforce preparation as a valid goal in its own right, alongside preparation for graduate study. Some occupational paths can begin with a bachelor’s degree; others require more education or a separate credential. Check requirements for the jobs you are considering rather than assuming that a psychology major alone qualifies you for them.

Master’s degree

A master’s degree may prepare students for particular research, organizational, educational, or service roles. The degree does not automatically authorize independent clinical practice. Job scope and eligibility for a license depend on the specific occupation and the rules where you plan to work. Ask each program which career paths its graduates pursue and how its curriculum and practical training prepare them for those roles.

Doctorate

Doctoral education is often central to careers as a psychologist, especially independent practice and some research or academic roles. A doctorate by itself does not guarantee a license. Depending on the jurisdiction, applicants may also need supervised professional experience, examinations, or other requirements set by a licensing board.

Can you become a therapist with a bachelor’s degree?

A bachelor’s degree in psychology alone does not qualify you to provide therapy as an independently licensed clinician. “Therapist” is used broadly, and requirements vary across regulated professions and jurisdictions. Some behavioral-health or support roles may be open to people with undergraduate education, but their duties, required credentials, and supervision arrangements are not the same as independent clinical practice.

If your goal is to provide therapy, identify the specific regulated profession and location where you want to practice. Check the relevant licensing board’s requirements for degree type, accreditation or program acceptance, supervised hours, examinations, and other conditions before enrolling. Do not assume that rules for psychologists also apply to counselors, school-based practitioners, or every other therapist title.

How to compare psychology programs before you enroll

For a personal-finance decision, consider both what a program costs and whether it prepares you for a realistic next step. Compare specific programs against your career goal; a degree label by itself does not establish fit or eligibility for a regulated role.

  • Career fit: Does the curriculum support the occupation and specialty you actually want?
  • Training and experience: Which research methods, statistics, laboratory work, practicum, internship, or supervised field experiences are included?
  • Credential acceptance: Is the exact program accredited or otherwise accepted for your intended career and licensing jurisdiction?
  • Graduate outcomes: What jobs or further study do graduates pursue, and how does the program prepare them? APA recommends asking programs about their graduates’ employment and career paths.
  • Total financial commitment: What is the full cost, how long will completion take, and what financial aid is available?
  • Online requirements: If the program is online, what in-person, laboratory, practicum, or supervised components must you complete?

For graduate study, APA also advises matching a program to your interests and considering the strengths of its faculty and training. These questions can help you compare the likely educational investment with the requirements of the work you intend to pursue.

What APA accreditation does—and does not—mean

APA does not accredit undergraduate bachelor’s programs. Its Commission on Accreditation accredits specified graduate programs in clinical, counseling, and school psychology, including combinations of those areas, as well as certain internship and postdoctoral training programs. Do not describe an undergraduate psychology major as “APA-accredited.”

Institutional accreditation and professional-program accreditation are separate checks. APA says program accreditation can be relevant to educational and scientific preparation and may facilitate licensure where a jurisdiction requires an accredited program. Requirements differ, so confirm that the specific program meets the rules for the place where you plan to practice. Consult APA’s Choosing a Program guidance and its APA-Accredited Programs directory, then verify requirements with the relevant licensing board.

Is a psychology degree worth the cost?

There is no single answer for every student. The degree may support workforce entry, graduate study, or a career in a related field, but the education required—and its cost—depends on the occupation. Before committing to additional years of school, map your target role to its credential requirements and compare programs’ total cost, financial aid, completion time, relevant training, and graduate pathways.

APA’s career resources include Psychology as a Major: Is It Right for Me and What Can I Do With My Degree?, which focuses on subfields and reasons for studying psychology, as well as Career Paths in Psychology: Where Your Degree Can Take You and Your Practicum in Psychology: A Guide for Maximizing Knowledge and Competence.
