Sony’s rounded cumulative sell-in figures put the console near 75 million by that point. These are historical figures: Sony’s latest cited official total is more than 95 million worldwide units sold in on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026.
What Sony reported for the 75 million milestone
The holiday quarter was Sony’s fiscal third quarter of FY2024, covering October 1 through December 31, 2024. In supplemental information issued February 13, 2025, Sony Group Corporation reported 9.5 million PS5 hardware units for that quarter, compared with 8.2 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Sony’s quarterly hardware measure is sell-in: units sold by Sony into the retail channel, not a count of consoles verified as purchased by consumers during those three months. The comparison supports calling it a record holiday quarter for PS5 sell-in within Sony’s listed PS5 quarterly series through FY2024 Q3. It does not establish a record for all consoles, consumer purchases, or every possible measure of PlayStation sales.
How to read the sales figures
Sell-in: Sony’s reported quarterly hardware measure
Sell-in records units Sony sells into the retail channel. It is useful for tracking shipments and the flow of hardware into the market, but it is not interchangeable with consumer sell-through. Retail inventory and timing can affect the gap between the two measures.

Sell-through: consoles bought by consumers
Sony uses separate language for the consumer measure. In December 2023, Sony Interactive Entertainment said PS5 had passed 50 million units “sold through to consumers” as of December 9, 2023. That milestone and the quarterly sell-in figures describe different things and should not be added together or treated as direct equivalents. How the historical figure compares with Sony’s latest total
The 75 million figure belongs to the period around the end of 2024; it is not Sony’s current cumulative total. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official business data reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold in worldwide on a sell-in basis as of June 30, 2026. What Sony said about the PS5 audience
Sony’s FY2024 Q3 earnings presentation reported 129 million monthly active PlayStation users in December 2024, which it described as the highest number in PlayStation history at that time. This is a company-reported engagement measure, not a count of PS5 owners. Sony FY2024 Q3 earnings presentation
The same presentation said, “More than 40% of users who purchased a PS5 during the quarter were new users.” The statement refers to the quarter’s PS5 purchasers as reported by Sony; it does not mean that more than 40% of all PlayStation users were new.

Sony also said cumulative PS5 unit sales from launch through the end of December 2024 were essentially at the same level as PS4’s cumulative sales over the corresponding period after its launch, despite PS5’s higher price. This is Sony’s comparison of its own cumulative unit-sales figures, not a claim that the consoles had equal prices or revenue.
