Several appliance brands manufacture some products in U.S. factories, but a brand’s American identity does not mean every model is made here. Whirlpool, Speed Queen, Sub-Zero/Wolf, GE Appliances, and BlueStar all have reported U.S. production; the relevant factory and country of origin vary by product category and model. Before buying, check the exact model’s current origin claim.
What “made in the USA” means for appliances
For an unqualified “Made in USA” claim, the Federal Trade Commission’s standard is that a product be “all or virtually all” made in the United States. Final assembly and significant processing must take place domestically, and foreign content must be negligible. A U.S. brand name or a factory in the country does not by itself establish that a particular appliance meets this standard. The FTC explains how the standard applies.
The distinction matters because appliance companies can produce some categories domestically while sourcing other models or components elsewhere. The brand examples below are based on Yale Appliance’s retailer reporting, dated July 30, 2025; it is not a SKU-by-SKU audit or a guarantee of any model’s current origin. Which appliances are made in the USA?
These five brands have reported U.S. manufacturing, but the evidence applies to particular categories—not every product sold under each name.

Whirlpool
Whirlpool has factories in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Yale Appliance reports that most laundry, cooking, and refrigeration lines are produced in the United States, particularly under the Whirlpool, Maytag, and KitchenAid brands. Origin varies, so do not assume that a specific Whirlpool-family appliance is U.S.-made without checking its model-specific information.
Speed Queen
Yale Appliance identifies Speed Queen as a U.S.-manufacturing laundry brand and reports Wisconsin production at the brand and category level. That reporting does not establish the current country of origin for every Speed Queen model; verify the particular washer or dryer.

Sub-Zero and Wolf
Yale Appliance reports Sub-Zero refrigerators are built in Wisconsin and Wolf ranges in Arizona. It also reports that Cove dishwasher production began in Kentucky in 2022. These are category-specific claims, not a blanket statement about every product or component sold under the brands.
GE Appliances
Yale Appliance reports that most GE cooking appliances, full-size refrigerators, and dishwashers are made at plants in Kentucky, Georgia, and Tennessee. It notes exceptions, including certain laundry and smaller appliances. GE Appliances is owned by Haier; ownership and manufacturing location are separate questions, and neither fact establishes the origin of an individual model.

Yale Appliance reports BlueStar cooking appliances have been manufactured in Pennsylvania since the 1880s, while newer column refrigerators and freezers are built in Iowa. This is secondary retailer reporting, so confirm the particular appliance’s current origin rather than extending those claims to the full product range.
How to verify a model before buying
- Identify the exact model. Record the model number, including suffixes that distinguish sizes, finishes, or configurations.
- Look for the origin statement for that model. Check the product label and the manufacturer’s current product information; a retailer’s brand-level description may not cover every variant.
- Read the wording carefully. “Assembled in the USA” and “Made in USA” are not interchangeable claims. For an unqualified Made in USA claim, the FTC standard is “all or virtually all” domestic content, with final assembly and significant processing in the United States.
- Confirm with the manufacturer if the listing is unclear. Ask about the exact model’s country of origin rather than whether the brand is “American-made.”
How to choose among these brands
There is no single winner established by the manufacturing information above. Compare the specific appliance category and model, its current origin statement, its price tier, and the availability of local service and parts. A domestic factory report can help narrow a search, but it does not establish a model’s reliability, durability, or fit for a household.
