On 6 December 2024, COH Sports said it had secured EFL approval for its proposed acquisition of Sheffield United, calling approval the “last outstanding matter” before completion. The deal was not complete that day: BBC Sport reported that the takeover was completed on 23 December, with consortium leaders Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy joining the club as co-chairmen.
What the prospective owners said
In a joint statement reported on 6 December 2024, COH Sports leaders Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy said: “We are pleased to have secured approval from the EFL and thank them for their thoughtful engagement on the process. This was the last outstanding matter, and we look forward to moving forward to completion as soon as possible.” Sheff United Way reported the statement.
The consortium also said it wanted the takeover completed quickly so it could support manager Chris Wilder and the team during the January transfer window. That was an expression of intent at the time; it does not by itself establish that specific funding was provided or that particular transfers followed.
Then-chairman Yusuf Giansiracusa separately said: “We are pleased to hear that COH Sports has finally received EFL approval. We look forward to updating you over the coming days.” His message was reported in his capacity as the club’s chairman at the time.

Approval was not the same as completion
The key distinction is procedural: EFL approval cleared an outstanding step, but it did not itself transfer ownership. The reported sequence was:
- 6 December 2024: COH Sports said it had EFL approval and hoped to complete as soon as possible.
- 23 December 2024: BBC Sport reported that COH Sports had completed the acquisition. Rosen and Eltoukhy joined the board as co-chairmen, ending Prince Abdullah’s five-year period as sole owner. BBC Sport’s report described the completed deal.
- 2024/25 season: Sheffield United’s annual report for the year ended 30 June 2025 later described the season as marking completion of COH Sports’ acquisition. The club’s annual report provides that retrospective confirmation.
What is known about the delay—and what is not
The December 6 statement identified EFL approval as the last outstanding matter at that point. The cited reports and club annual report do not establish the precise reason the process took as long as it did before approval, so a more specific cause cannot be confirmed from them.

They also do not provide enough primary documentation to state the full purchase price, payment structure or every asset included in the transaction. The EFL’s current guidance says a change in control is subject to requirements of both the Independent Football Regulator and the EFL, and describes an Owners, Directors and Senior Executives regime from 5 May 2026. That later framework should not be treated as an explanation for the 2024 delay. EFL guidance.
