Working while studying can provide income, practical experience and career insight, but it also uses time and energy that might otherwise go to coursework. Research does not show that student employment always improves or damages academic outcomes: the effect depends on factors such as work intensity, schedule, job structure and the student’s circumstances.
What are the pros and cons of working while studying?
The decision is a trade-off, not a universal yes-or-no. Paid work may help cover expenses and build experience, while demanding or inflexible shifts can make it harder to study, participate in classes and stay on track. Consider both the immediate financial value and the longer-term fit with your education and goals.
| Potential benefit | Possible trade-off |
|---|---|
| Income that can help meet expenses | Time spent working is time unavailable for coursework, rest or other commitments |
| Workplace skills, responsibility and experience | A job may offer little connection to your course or future goals |
| Career insight, confidence and contacts | Unpredictable shifts or a long commute can make study planning harder |
| Greater financial autonomy | Actual financial value depends on take-home pay, work-related costs and any relevant aid rules |
Does working while studying affect grades and completion?
There is no single academic effect that applies to every student. A 2024 meta-analysis by Katerina Kroupova, Tomas Havranek and Zuzana Irsova synthesized 861 estimates from 69 studies. It found a small overall mean effect after addressing publication and endogeneity biases, while finding that effects can vary and may be larger for high-intensity work and decisions about whether to continue studying. Read the meta-analysis.
Other outcomes should not be treated as interchangeable with grades. A 2017 literature review, revised in 2019, reports more adverse associations for educational choices, engagement and decisions to continue than for measured performance such as graduation. An association does not by itself establish that work caused the outcome; students who work may differ in finances, goals or other circumstances. Read the literature review.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Education reported in July 2026 that employment among domestic tertiary students had risen from around half of students in teaching months before 2021 to closer to 60 percent in recent years. It also found that higher work intensity was associated with lower completion rates for some students, but explicitly said its analysis does not identify whether employment causes differences in completion. Read the Education Counts analysis.
What can a student gain from working?
Income and financial autonomy
Students interviewed for a 2013 UK government report commonly described financial reasons for taking paid work. Earnings may help with expenses and give a student more control over day-to-day spending. The interviews do not establish the net financial benefit for every student after commuting costs, taxes or possible effects on financial aid. Read the UK student employment report.

Experience and transferable skills
A job can expose students to workplace expectations, customers, colleagues and responsibility. A UK analysis of the Futuretrack cohort examined social and technical skills and labor-market progression; its findings favored work experience, particularly structured work-based learning and paid work. That is evidence of potential value, not a guarantee that any job will improve later outcomes. Read the Futuretrack analysis.
Career insight and networks
For teenagers, the OECD describes potential benefits of part-time work that include technical and soft skills, social networks and greater confidence in career planning. These points concern teenage work and should not automatically be generalized to every adult student or job. Read the OECD overview.
Paid work can also offer a change from academic routines, but the UK interview report does not quantify stress relief. Whether a job feels like a welcome change or an added strain depends on the person and the schedule.
What are the main risks and trade-offs?
Less time for learning and academic engagement
Working shifts reduce the time available for studying and can compete with class participation, assignments and other academic commitments. This matters especially when coursework requires regular attendance, labs, placements or concentrated preparation.

Intensity and persistence
Higher work intensity deserves particular attention: research finds concerns around persistence and completion, though evidence differs and some observed relationships may reflect who chooses or needs to work. The OECD also warns that excessive work alongside full-time secondary study can negatively affect academic achievement. See the OECD discussion of teenage part-time work.
Balancing pressure and schedule disruption
UK student interviews documented challenges in balancing work and study. An inflexible roster, late-notice changes or shifts that collide with deadlines can make the two harder to manage. A job does not need to be course-related to have value, but its schedule and commute should make sense alongside the immediate income and experience it provides.

How many hours should a student work?
The sources reviewed do not establish one universally safe weekly-hours limit for every student, course, country and job. The relationship depends not just on hours but also on shift predictability, course demands, study level, financial pressure and the work itself. Treat an hours figure from a particular study or program as specific to that context, not as a guarantee for your own situation.
Instead of starting with a fixed target, map your actual study commitments and consider whether you can reduce hours during exams, major projects or especially demanding course periods. If work begins to displace essential study or attendance, that is a reason to reassess the arrangement.
How to decide whether a job fits your studies
- Map non-negotiable commitments. Put classes, labs, placements, assignment deadlines and realistic study blocks on one schedule before agreeing to shifts.
- Check the roster. Ask how far ahead shifts are set, whether changes are common, and whether hours can be adjusted during exam or deadline periods.
- Work out the financial value. Compare expected take-home pay with commuting and other work-related costs. Check the rules of any aid program that applies to you rather than assuming all student jobs affect aid in the same way.
- Weigh the experience. Consider whether the role offers useful skills, structured training, career insight or contacts. An unrelated job can still be worthwhile if its income and schedule fit your needs.
- Review the arrangement as circumstances change. A schedule that works in one term may not fit another with heavier coursework. If the balance becomes unsustainable, discuss a change in hours or shifts with your employer.
A planner or calendar can make classes, shifts and study blocks easier to see together; it is an organizational aid, not a proven way to improve academic results.
What U.S. Federal Work-Study students should know
Federal Work-Study is a U.S. financial aid program, so its guidance and rules should not be applied to ordinary jobs or other countries’ aid programs. Federal Student Aid says the employer and school financial aid office will build a schedule around classes. It also advises students to discuss schedule or hour changes with the employer and financial aid office. Eligibility and academic progress requirements are specific to the program. Read Federal Student Aid’s Work-Study guidance.
