Online shopping can save time, widen your choice and make it easier to compare sellers—but the listed price is not always the full cost, and you cannot inspect the item before it arrives. Whether it is the better option depends on the product, seller, delivery and return terms, payment protections and how much personal information the transaction requires.
Online versus in-person shopping at a glance
| Factor | Online shopping | In-person shopping |
|---|---|---|
| Convenience and choice | Shop from different sellers without traveling; online listings may offer a broader range of products. | Requires visiting a store, but you can shop and take eligible items home in person. |
| Price and total cost | Easy to compare listings, but shipping, handling and other charges can change the total. | You can compare prices across stores, though doing so may take more time; there is no delivery charge for an item you carry home. |
| Inspection | You rely on descriptions, images and seller information until the item arrives. | You can usually examine the item before buying, although the amount of inspection possible varies by product and store. |
| Delivery and returns | Delivery takes time and may be delayed. Returns can involve deadlines, shipping costs or other conditions. | You can take an item with you, but return rules still depend on the retailer and product. |
| Seller and payment recourse | Protections depend on the seller, marketplace policy, payment method and applicable local rules. | You can deal with a store directly, but payment recourse and return rights still depend on the circumstances and local rules. |
| Personal data | A site or app may collect information such as purchase details or location, depending on its practices and your settings. | A store may also collect information, for example through a loyalty program or payment, but the data involved depends on how you shop. |
These are typical tradeoffs, not guarantees. A dependable online seller with clear terms may be a better choice than a distant store, while an unfamiliar listing for a product you need to inspect may favor an in-person purchase.

Advantages of online shopping
It can save time and improve access
You can shop without traveling, compare options when it suits you and reach sellers or products that may not be available nearby. The OECD describes broader choice and increased convenience as benefits of online markets (OECD, Consumer policy and digital technologies).
It makes comparing offers easier
When several sellers list the same product, you can compare prices and terms without visiting multiple shops. Compare the delivered cost, not just the headline price: shipping, handling, taxes where applicable and other disclosed fees can make a cheaper listing more expensive overall.

- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.
- Multiple gift card designs and denominations to choose from.
- Redeemable towards millions of items store-wide at Amazon.com or certain affiliated websites.
- Available for immediate delivery. Gift cards sent by email can be scheduled up to a year in advance.
- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
It gives you time to review details
Online listings let you revisit descriptions, seller policies and order details before committing. That advantage only helps when you read them carefully: check condition, delivery estimates, return rules and who is responsible for resolving a problem.
Disadvantages and risks to weigh
You cannot fully assess the item before buying
Photos and descriptions cannot always show scale, feel, fit, operation or wear as well as an in-person inspection. Listings may describe goods as used, refurbished, vintage or close-out; those labels can mean different things in context, so read the complete condition description. For marketplace listings, check whether the photos show the actual item or a representative product image. Canada’s Office of Consumer Affairs advises shoppers to assess online sellers and terms before purchasing (Online shopping).

The final cost and delivery may be less predictable
Shipping, handling and other fees can erase an apparent saving. Delivery also adds a wait, and a promised arrival date is not the same as having the product in hand. Review the delivery estimate and the seller’s policy for delays or problems before ordering.
Returns can take effort and money
An item that does not fit or match expectations may need to be repacked and shipped back. Check the return deadline, refund conditions, return-postage responsibility and any restocking fee before purchase. A low price may not be worthwhile if the return is costly or difficult.

Seller identity and marketplace rules matter
A marketplace can host many sellers, and the platform’s involvement does not necessarily mean it is the seller or that every purchase has the same protection. Identify who is selling the item, how to contact them, who handles disputes and what the platform’s protection policy covers. Keep messages on-platform if its rules require that for coverage; avoid moving payment outside the platform’s process if doing so removes protections. The FTC’s U.S. guidance explains how marketplace and seller policies can affect a buyer’s options (Buying From an Online Marketplace).
Reviews, scams and misleading offers require judgment
Reviews can help reveal recurring issues, but incentives or manipulation can make them unreliable. Look for specific, consistent detail rather than relying on a single glowing review, and search independently for complaints about the seller. Be cautious of pressure to act quickly, implausibly low prices or demands for gift cards, wire transfers or cryptocurrency.

- To access your card information safely, type the complete website address shown on your Gift Card (MyGift.GiftCardMall.com) directly into your browser's address bar. Don't use search engines or shortened versions of the website address, as these may lead you to fake or fraudulent sites. Do not provide any Gift Card details (example: Card Number) to someone you do not know or trust. If you believe you've reached an illegitimate website, contact cardholder service at 1-888-524-1283. Be cautious of phishing sites, there are a variety of scams in which fraudsters try to trick others into paying with gift cards.

Official figures illustrate the scale of problems but describe different populations and periods. The European Commission says online shoppers are over 60% more likely than offline shoppers to experience purchase problems; the page does not establish the underlying survey year for that comparison (Key consumer data). Separately, an OECD publication reporting a 2021 survey across 13 countries says 50% of online consumers faced at least one e-commerce problem in the preceding year, and that harm after redress reached up to 3.1% of total e-commerce market size in some countries (Measuring financial consumer detriment in e-commerce). These are not directly interchangeable estimates or measures of any one shopper’s risk.
Payment and privacy protections are not automatic
Prefer payment methods that provide a way to dispute eligible charges, where available, and keep order confirmations and correspondence. The FTC advises U.S. consumers that paying by credit card can offer protection if a scam or other problem occurs, but that is not a guarantee of recovery and dispute rights vary by payment method and jurisdiction (FTC, Online Shopping).

- Calculate the full price. Add shipping, handling, taxes where applicable and other disclosed fees; compare the total across sellers.
- Confirm the seller and listing. Check the seller’s identity, contact details, independent complaints and marketplace status. Read the full description, including condition, size, materials, compatibility and what is included.
- Check delivery and return terms. Note the delivery promise, return deadline, refund conditions, return-shipping responsibility and any restocking fee.
- Understand marketplace coverage. Confirm who handles a dispute and whether the purchase qualifies for platform protection. Keep required communication and payment within the platform.
- Choose payment carefully. Use a method with dispute options where available. Do not pay a seller who insists on gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or an off-platform transaction you cannot verify.
- Save the transaction record. Keep the listing, order confirmation, seller promises, policies, messages and payment records until the transaction is resolved.
- Review data practices. Check the site’s or app’s privacy information and settings, including location permissions and sharing of purchase information.
When online or in-person shopping makes more sense
Online may suit you when
- You know the product and model you want, and do not need to inspect it first.
- You can verify the seller and compare complete costs and clear terms.
- Waiting for delivery is acceptable and the return process is manageable.
In person may suit you when
- Fit, feel, freshness, condition or operation is important to assess before paying.
- You need the item immediately and cannot rely on a delivery estimate.
- The online seller’s identity, listing, payment request or return terms are difficult to verify.
Legal protections depend on where you live
Consumer rights and complaint procedures vary by country and sometimes by state or province. As a U.S.-specific example, the FTC says sellers must ship within the timeframe they promised; if they made no shipping-time promise, its rule generally requires shipment within 30 days after receiving the relevant order and payment information. The FTC also describes a credit-card billing-error dispute deadline tied to the first bill showing the error. These examples are not universal rules; check the current consumer-protection and payment-dispute procedures that apply where you live (FTC, Online Shopping).
