Monero, Firo and Dash are the clearest privacy-focused alternatives to Zcash, but they work differently. Monero makes transaction privacy mandatory by protocol; Firo’s Spark supports private payments and selective disclosure, and Firo says private payments are the default in its official wallets; Dash offers an optional shielded pool on its Evolution Platform. None of these models makes every part of a payment or a user’s activity automatically private.
How the privacy models compare
| Currency | Privacy model | What the cited project documentation says is hidden | Important boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monero (XMR) | Transaction privacy is mandatory by protocol. | Monero’s overview lists RingCT, stealth addresses and ring signatures among its privacy technologies. | These features concern transaction privacy; they do not establish that all network or off-chain metadata is hidden. Monero Project overview. |
| Firo (FIRO), using Spark | Private Spark payments; Firo says private payments are the default in its official wallets. | Firo says Spark hides the sender, recipient and amount, and offers view keys for chosen disclosure. | The membership set is bounded at 215, or 32,768 coins, according to Firo’s 2026 comparison guide. That is a protocol set size, not a count of active users or a guarantee about a particular payment. Firo’s privacy page and Firo’s comparison guide. |
| Dash (DASH), on Evolution Platform | Optional shielded pool. | Dash documentation says transfers within the pool conceal parties and amounts. | Pool use and shield/unshield transitions are visible; amounts entering or leaving the pool are visible. The pool’s privacy depends on the notes in it. Dash Platform shielded-pool documentation. |
| Zcash (ZEC), the comparison point | Transparent and shielded transaction paths are available. | Shielded transactions conceal transaction details; transparent transactions expose public ledger details. | The path used and wallet behavior determine whether a transaction is shielded. A shielded-capable currency does not mean every transaction is shielded. |
The table compares protocol descriptions, not independently measured anonymity. A privacy feature’s existence does not by itself establish how difficult it is to associate a particular transaction with a person.
Monero: privacy is the default protocol behavior
Monero’s project overview says minimum ring-signature sizes were set so that all transactions are private by mandate, and describes RingCT as hiding transaction amounts. It also lists stealth addresses and ring signatures. This makes Monero a different choice from a system where a user chooses whether to use a shielded pool or transaction path. Monero Project overview.
The same overview mentions transactions over Tor or I2P and Dandelion++, but listing network-related tools is not evidence that a user’s IP address, timing, or other network metadata is always concealed. On-chain transaction privacy and network privacy are separate questions.

Firo: Spark payments with selective disclosure
Firo describes Spark as its protocol for private direct payments and says it hides sender, recipient and amount from public ledger observers. The project also describes view keys that let a user share selected information. These are Firo’s descriptions of its design, not a promise that every real-world use is anonymous. Firo’s privacy page.
Firo’s comparison guide reports that Spark has been live on mainnet since 18 January 2024. It describes overlapping windows and a membership set of 215 coins, or 32,768 coins, in its 2026 guide. That figure is a protocol bound: it does not mean 32,768 people are participating, or that each payment has that many plausible participants. Usage and wallet behavior still matter. Dash: a shielded pool with visible entry and exit
Dash Platform documentation describes its shielded pool as optional and based on Orchard, the shielded protocol also used by Zcash. While funds remain inside the pool, the documentation says shielded transfers hide the parties and amounts. The documentation identifies protocol version 12 as the point at which the pool became available. Dash Platform shielded-pool documentation.
The pool does not shield all Dash activity. Dash documentation says observers can identify whether a transition is a shield, unshield or transfer, and can see amounts entering or leaving the pool. Layer-one transactions on either side are not shielded by the pool, and the privacy set depends on the other notes in it. Dash announced that shielded transactions were live on the Evolution mainnet on 4 August 2026; that is a project-reported launch date, not an independent performance assessment. What to weigh before choosing
- Whether privacy is automatic: Monero makes transaction privacy mandatory by protocol. Firo and Dash offer private functionality with their own wallet or pool conditions; Zcash supports both transparent and shielded paths.
- Which transaction details are hidden: Sender, recipient and amount are distinct fields. Check what the specific protocol and wallet conceal, rather than relying on the broad label “privacy coin.”
- How funds enter or leave private activity: Visible deposits, withdrawals or transitions can affect how activity is linked. Dash’s documentation explicitly identifies visible shield and unshield transitions and amounts.
- The relevant privacy set: A protocol’s set size is not the same as the number of active users or the effective anonymity of an individual payment. Firo’s stated 32,768-coin bound should be read in that limited sense.
- Network metadata: On-chain privacy does not automatically hide IP addresses, timing, wallet-provider records or other information generated outside the ledger.
- Disclosure and practical access: Firo describes view keys for selective sharing. Separately, verify that the wallet, exchange, recipient and jurisdiction you intend to use support the relevant currency and transaction type; protocol documentation alone cannot establish that.
Which alternative fits the question?
If the main question is “Which cryptocurrency hides transactions automatically?”, Monero is the clearest answer among these alternatives: its project describes transaction privacy as mandatory by protocol. If you want a private-payment design that also describes selective disclosure, consider Firo Spark. If you specifically want an optional shielded pool on Dash Evolution, Dash documents that capability, with visible pool entry and exit. These are different privacy trade-offs, not a reliable basis for declaring one currency universally “most anonymous.”
For any of the options, distinguish a protocol’s stated protections from the behavior of a particular wallet and from the privacy of the full payment process. The available project documentation does not establish current exchange coverage, merchant support or legal availability by country.
