Commercial printers focused on productivity and selective investment amid cost and pricing pressure; print remained a major format in U.S. book and course-material publishing; and Europe’s graphic-print market faced pressure even as packaging, labels and some digital-print applications offered opportunities. News publishers, meanwhile, continued to rely on print for much of their circulation revenue while navigating digital change.
These signals describe different businesses and geographies, not one global market forecast. For owners and operators, the practical question is which developments match their customers, job mix and production constraints.
Commercial printers: productivity drove selective investment
For commercial printers, the 2025 outlook was shaped by a familiar business tension: improve output while managing costs that were rising faster than prices. Andrew D. Paparozzi’s January 6, 2025 article in Printing Impressions summarized preliminary year-end 2024 results from a PRINTING United Alliance survey panel. The article did not state the panel’s sample size in its summary, so the figures should be read as survey signals rather than an industry census.
Productivity and spending plans
In those preliminary results, 82.7% of respondents identified increasing productivity as a priority. More than 71% said they expected to purchase equipment, hardware or software over the following year. That was stated intent, not confirmation that the purchases occurred or that they delivered a return.

The planned investment categories included:
- Bindery and finishing equipment, which can become a constraint when press output increases.
- Commercial inkjet, including as a possible replacement for offset on suitable work.
- Workflow software, digital infrastructure and management intelligence systems.
- E-commerce, fulfillment and print enhancement.
- Wide-format presses.
The survey reports priorities and intentions, not a universal technology ranking. The right investment depends on the work a shop can win and produce profitably.
Margins and operating conditions
The same article described weak overall performance through the first three quarters of 2024 among the surveyed group: average sales rose 1.7%, while price increases lagged operating-cost inflation. These were preliminary panel results, not a final measure for every commercial printer.

U.S. publishing: print remained a substantial revenue format
The Association of American Publishers’ August 10, 2026 StatShot release estimates revenue for calendar year 2025 across U.S. books and course materials. It reported total publishing revenue of $33.4 billion, 2.5% above the $32.5 billion estimated for 2024. This is publishing revenue across formats, not a measure of commercial-print sales or the whole print industry.
Format mix varied by publishing category
Print formats—hardback, paperback, mass market and special bindings—accounted for 50.6% of publishers’ revenue in AAP’s 2025 estimate. Within Trade publishing, which covers consumer books, print formats represented 76.3% of revenue. The Trade figure should not be generalized to course materials, all publishing, or print businesses outside publishing.

AAP also estimated hardback revenue at $8.2 billion, up 3.9%, and paperback revenue at $8.0 billion, up 2.1%, across its stated publisher categories. These figures show that digital growth did not make print formats marginal in the categories measured, but they do not establish a trend for print manufacturing as a whole.
Europe: graphic print pressure alongside packaging and label opportunities
Intergraf’s 2025 review of the European print market describes a challenging outlook for graphic print overall. It identifies packaging and labels as opportunity areas and says digital print—largely inkjet—continues to expand in selected applications. This is a Europe-specific assessment, not a forecast for every region.

Digital capability does not guarantee market growth
Intergraf cautions that a production technology cannot by itself reverse contraction in an underlying market. Direct mail and transactional print were among the shrinking segments it discussed. For printers considering digital capacity, the distinction matters: shorter runs or faster version changes can suit digital production, but the equipment still needs customers and applications with durable demand.
Book printing and inventory
The review expects European book-printing output to decline in volume terms, while noting that digital production can support just-in-time ordering, lower inventory and less waste. Those operational advantages may help publishers and printers manage stock; they do not mean that the review forecasts rising book-print volume.

News media: print’s circulation role is not its total revenue share
WAN-IFRA’s World Press Trends Outlook 2024–2025 draws on more than 240 participants across 85 countries. Its overview reports that print still generates 82% of surveyed news publishers’ circulation revenue. That figure concerns circulation revenue in the surveyed news-media population: it is not print’s share of advertising, total publisher revenue, or the wider print industry.
The report also describes pressure on core revenue, costs, digital transformation, investment priorities and AI readiness. For news publishers, the finding is best understood as a mixed transition: print remains important to circulation income while businesses face the need to adapt operations and revenue models.
How to judge a print investment for your business
The sector outlooks point to investment activity, but they do not identify a machine or software purchase that suits every operation. A practical review should start with the shop’s own economics and customer demand rather than with a technology trend.
- Find the binding constraint. Determine whether throughput is limited by press capacity, finishing, workflow handoffs, fulfillment or another step. Faster printing will not raise sellable output if downstream work cannot keep pace.
- Match capability to the job mix. Estimate what share of current and likely work fits the proposed technology, including run lengths, versioning needs, substrates and finishing requirements.
- Test demand before capacity. Identify actual customer needs and repeatable work, not just broad interest in digital, inkjet, packaging or personalization.
- Check integration and utilization. Consider how equipment or software connects to existing data, workflow and staffing, and whether expected use can support the cost of ownership.
- Compare acting now with waiting. Weigh financing and operating costs against the cost of delays, lost work or persistent bottlenecks. The trade-press survey documents intended spending, but it does not provide a universal payback period.
- Use the right market boundary. Separate local customer demand from a European sector outlook, a U.S. publishing estimate or a global news-publisher survey. Those populations answer different questions.
What the 2025 evidence can—and cannot—show
Together, the sources describe a varied year: productivity and targeted investment priorities among surveyed commercial printers; durable print-format revenue in U.S. publishing; pressure on European graphic print alongside selected growth areas; and print’s continued circulation role in surveyed news publishers. Because the studies cover different sectors, dates and geographies, they cannot be combined into a single global growth rate or market-size estimate for print.
