Passengers on Royal Princess’s September 12, 2026, seven-night Alaska cruise from Seattle were reportedly offered a refund of 50% of their cruise fare after an engine technical issue restricted the ship’s speed and led to two port cancellations. Cruise.Blog reported that some guests wanted a refund closer to 75%. That criticism does not establish that every passenger agreed, or that 75% was legally required.

What happened on the Royal Princess voyage

Cruise.Blog reported on September 15, 2026, that an engine technical issue restricted Royal Princess’s speed during its seven-night Alaska voyage, which departed Seattle on September 12. The report did not give an engineering diagnosis.

According to a passenger letter reproduced in the report, the ship would skip Juneau, spend the day at sea, then head toward Skagway. It would also drop Ketchikan and sail directly toward Victoria. These itinerary details are attributed to the letter as reported by Cruise.Blog, not to an independently confirmed Princess notice. [Cruise.Blog report]

What compensation Princess reportedly offered

The letter reproduced by Cruise.Blog said affected passengers would receive 50% of their cruise fare back to the original payment method within 10 to 15 business days. It also said guests with Princess shore excursions booked in Juneau or Ketchikan would receive automatic onboard-account credits. [Reported passenger letter and offer]

Captain Steven Holland’s apology, as reproduced in the report, read: “We apologize for any disappointment this change may cause and appreciate your understanding during these unexpected circumstances.” [Captain’s statement reproduced by Cruise.Blog]

Why some passengers reportedly objected

Cruise.Blog reported that some guests felt the fare refund should have been closer to 75%. That is a reported disagreement over the amount, not evidence of a passenger poll or a consensus among everyone aboard. The phrase “joke payout” is headline wording; the reviewed reporting does not establish that a passenger used it verbatim. [Coverage of passenger criticism]

Does the reported offer establish what passengers were owed?

No. The incident account and refund terms surfaced in a cruise-news report reproducing a passenger letter, rather than a Princess-hosted notice. The reviewed material does not establish an industry-wide compensation standard or determine whether the 50% offer met any passenger’s individual legal rights.

Princess’s UK passage contract discusses English law and rights under the UK Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 for its defined UK package context. It lists technical problems among examples of “unavoidable and extraordinary circumstances.” That contract does not, on the available information, establish the terms governing this Seattle-origin voyage, individual bookings, or any claim arising from it. What future cruisers can take from the incident

For a missed-port or mechanical-disruption dispute, keep the booking confirmation, the itinerary-change notice, the refund or credit terms, and receipts for relevant expenses. Check the contract and travel-protection policy that actually apply to your booking before assuming a missed port or technical issue is covered; coverage depends on policy wording and circumstances.

Cruise.Blog reported Royal Princess as a 142,229-gross-ton ship launched in 2013, with capacity for over 3,500 passengers and 1,346 crew. These are secondary-source figures and are not necessary to assess the reported compensation. [Ship figures reported by Cruise.Blog]
