Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV’s Net Worth: What’s Known

There is no publicly verified figure for Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV’s net worth. Reports have offered estimates ranging from nearly $1 billion to as much as $13 billion, but they do not establish an audited personal fortune or a final estate value. Those numbers also must not be confused with the budgets and assets of the Aga Khan Development Network and affiliated institutions.

What was Aga Khan IV’s estimated net worth?

The estimates vary substantially and are not reconciled using a common valuation method. The Washington Post reported that Forbes estimated his personal wealth at nearly $1 billion. In a February 2025 feature, EL PAÍS described the fortune as uncertain and relayed a $1 billion to $13 billion range attributed to The New York Times. The Associated Press said the extent of his financial empire was difficult to measure and noted that some reports placed his personal wealth in the billions.

Reported figure Attribution and date What it establishes
Nearly $1 billion Forbes estimate, as reported by The Washington Post in 2025 A reported estimate of personal wealth, not a verified valuation.
$1 billion to $13 billion Range attributed to The New York Times by EL PAÍS in February 2025 A broad reported range; EL PAÍS characterized the fortune as uncertain.

These figures are estimates, not a confirmed net-worth total. None of the cited reporting supplies a complete accounting of personal assets and liabilities that would resolve the difference.

Why the reported estimates differ

A reliable net-worth calculation requires identifying which assets belonged to him personally, valuing them, and subtracting liabilities. The sources reviewed do not provide audited personal financial statements, a complete asset inventory, or a probate valuation. Reports refer to investments, partnerships, and business interests, but they do not show a consistent method or scope for calculating the estimates.

It is especially important to distinguish private wealth from institutions and community resources associated with the Aga Khan. The AP reported an approximately $1 billion annual budget for nonprofit development activities. That is an organizational operating budget, not the Imam’s personal income or net worth. The Washington Post likewise distinguished the multibillion-dollar portfolio of Aga Khan-affiliated philanthropic efforts from his personal wealth. The sources do not establish that institutional assets or follower contributions were his private property.

Was there a confirmed estate value after his death?

No verified estate valuation is established by the cited sources. Aga Khan IV died in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, aged 88. His son Rahim was named Aga Khan V and the 50th hereditary Imam the following day, after the late Aga Khan’s will was unsealed. That succession does not itself establish the value of the estate or the amount inherited; the sources reviewed provide no verified estate accounting.

Who was Prince Karim Al-Hussaini Aga Khan IV?

Born in Geneva on December 13, 1936, Prince Karim Al-Hussaini succeeded his grandfather in 1957 at age 20 as the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims. The Aga Khan University says he graduated from Harvard in 1959 with a degree in Islamic history. He led the community until his death in 2025.

His public role included leadership of a large development network, but that institutional work should not be treated as a personal balance sheet. A reported institutional budget or philanthropic portfolio answers a different financial question from an individual’s net worth.
