Preply raised $4 million in a 2018 funding announcement to expand its online language-tutoring offering and grow its team. The reported product priorities included improving its calendar, adding instant booking and developing its mobile apps. The headline’s reference to 40 languages describes the service at that time; it is not a current language-count claim.

What happened in Preply’s $4 million funding announcement?

VentureBeat reported that Preply, an online marketplace connecting language learners with tutors, had raised $4 million. The stated aims were to expand the offering and grow the team, with calendar improvements, instant booking and mobile apps among the planned product priorities. These were intended uses, not confirmation that each project was completed.

The accessible report does not establish the round designation, whether the financing was equity or debt, the investors, valuation, cumulative funding, or specific countries and offices targeted. Those details should not be inferred from the $4 million figure. VentureBeat’s report is the source for the amount and announced priorities.

What was Preply offering in 2018?

Preply’s proposition was flexible, individualized language instruction online: learners could find tutors for live lessons rather than rely only on a fixed classroom schedule. The contemporaneous coverage framed the target audience as young professionals, but that does not mean the service was limited to that demographic.

For professionals, practical speaking ability can matter in relocation, international work, client conversations, interviews, presentations and collaboration across borders. One-to-one lessons can make room for more speaking and work-specific practice than a group class, but they depend on the learner’s attendance and can cost more. The marketplace also has two sides: it needs to attract learners and enough suitable tutors to give them relevant choice.

What was the $4 million intended to support?

  • Broader offering and team growth: VentureBeat described expansion and hiring as objectives.
  • Scheduling improvements: Calendar work and instant booking were named product priorities.
  • Mobile apps: Developing or improving the apps was also part of the stated product direction.

The report supports these as plans, not as a dollar-by-dollar budget or evidence that every feature launched. It also does not demonstrate that the funding was allocated to marketing or geographic expansion.

How has Preply changed since the 40-language headline?

The core idea—connecting learners with live tutors—continues, but current offerings go beyond the historical framing. Preply’s corporate-language page describes access to 60-plus languages, while the older headline said 40. These figures refer to different points in time and contexts, so the headline should not be read as a current catalogue count.

Today’s marketplace promotes one-to-one live lessons, tutor filters for specialty and availability, Preply Classroom, mobile access, and AI-supported feedback and practice. Its business-English listings are aimed at work situations such as meetings, presentations, interviews, negotiations, email and industry vocabulary. AI exercises and feedback can support practice; they are not evidence, by themselves, that a learner has achieved fluency. Preply’s business-English marketplace describes these offerings.

For individual professionals

Learners can compare tutor profiles, including qualifications, reviews, specialities, availability and listed prices, then use lessons for a specific goal or ongoing study. On the business-English page checked August 18, 2026, Preply listed lessons starting at $3 per hour and an average tutor price of $17 per hour. Those are marketplace figures, not guaranteed quotes: rates vary by tutor, location, specialization, currency and date. The page also showed examples of differing averages by tutor nationality and native-speaker status; those comparisons should not be treated as a price promise for an individual booking.

For employers

Preply Business is a separate employer-oriented service, not simply a bundle of consumer subscriptions. Its current positioning includes personalized learning plans, tutor matching, scheduling across time zones, AI-supported practice, progress tracking, dashboards, SSO and LMS integrations, centralized administration and account support. Corporate lessons are paid under an employer annual contract, with pricing set between Preply and the company; a public standard price is not stated. Preply Business outlines the program, while its corporate tutor-program help page describes the employer contract arrangement.

Preply’s business page advertises more than 2,000 companies and reports learner and HR outcomes, including confidence, work performance, tutor ratings and engagement. These are company-reported marketing claims based on its feedback process, not independent validation of learning outcomes.

How the current individual subscription works

As of August 18, 2026, the consumer model described in Preply’s help center is recurring rather than ordinary pay-as-you-go. Subscriptions are tied to a particular tutor and bill every 28 days, not on a calendar-month basis. The minimum is four lessons per cycle, and one-off lesson purchases are not generally offered.

  • Schedule unused lessons before renewal; lessons left unscheduled may expire.
  • You can change lesson quantity or duration. The help center says a subscription can be paused once per billing cycle for up to 20 days.
  • Cancel at least one day before the next billing date to avoid the next renewal.
  • If a tutor raises their price, the new rate requires your confirmation before it takes effect.

Check the renewal date and lesson balance in your account before committing to a plan. The current rules are detailed in Preply’s subscription help article.

Who may find Preply a good fit?

Preply may suit professionals who want live speaking practice, a tutor focused on a near-term work goal, and the flexibility to schedule around a busy or changing calendar. Employers may find Preply Business relevant when they need centralized administration, employee progress visibility and employer-paid training.

It may be a weaker fit for someone seeking a fixed, standardized curriculum, a guaranteed consistent teaching approach, or occasional one-off lessons. Marketplace choice means learners have to assess tutor fit and manage the ongoing relationship; rates and availability vary. Corporate buyers should evaluate the negotiated program separately from the individual subscription, because its administration and contract model serve a different need.

Why the funding story still matters

The $4 million announcement is a historical financing story, not current funding news. It captures an early attempt to scale online language tutoring around professional learners’ needs: convenient scheduling, tutor access and mobile use. By August 2026, Preply was presenting a broader product that combined the tutor marketplace with AI-supported practice and a managed corporate offering, while the original live-instruction proposition remained central.
