Prepared Hero describes it as a backup suction device, while the FDA advises using established choking rescue protocols first and considering an anti-choking device only if those protocols fail. That is not proof the product is ineffective; it means its product-specific effectiveness is not established by the evidence cited here.
What does the Prepared Hero device do?
Prepared Hero describes its device as a mask that fits over the mouth and nose, connected to a pump intended to create suction. The company says it is a supplementary tool—not a replacement for established choking rescue protocols—and that those protocols should be tried first. It says the device may be used if standard protocols have failed or are impossible and the person has a complete airway blockage. These are the manufacturer’s instructions and descriptions, not independently verified evidence of benefit. Prepared Hero product page
The manufacturer says the device is intended for adults, seniors, and children over 12 months and 22 pounds, subject to mask fit. That is a manufacturer-stated age and weight range, not an independently established medical recommendation. The product page also promotes quick and easy use; those marketing claims do not establish a clinical success rate or show that training and familiarity are unnecessary.
What does the FDA recommend doing first?
The FDA’s safety communication, updated March 4, 2026, encourages people to follow established choking rescue protocols approved by the American Red Cross and American Heart Association. These include back blows and/or abdominal thrusts for adults and children, with separate protocols for infants. The FDA states: “The established rescue protocols are the most effective method to relieve airway obstruction in a choking victim.” FDA safety communication

- Airway Clearance Solution LifeVac is an anti-choking device designed to provide an airway clearance solution as a second line treatment during choking emergencies.
- SECOND-LINE CHOKING RESCUE TREATMENT LifeVac is intended to be used after standard choking rescue protocols. Call 911 and perform 5 back blows and 5 abdominal thrusts first; if the obstruction is not cleared, use LifeVac.
- SIMPLE EMERGENCY PREPARATION We strongly encourage all customers to review the LifeVac training video to become familiar with proper use before an emergency occurs.
- FOR ADULTS AND CHILDREN (1+) LifeVac is designed for use on adults and children ages 1 and older.
- TRUSTED WORLDWIDE LifeVac is trusted by families, caregivers, and medical professionals worldwide and has helped save thousands of lives.
The FDA says an intervention is for a complete airway blockage or when the person cannot cough. With a partial obstruction, the person may be able to clear it; an intervention such as back blows could make the obstruction worse. Follow the relevant established protocol rather than treating every episode of coughing or difficulty swallowing as the same emergency.
The FDA warns that reaching for an anti-choking device before following established protocols could delay critical action: a device may need to be found, unpacked, assembled, and operated according to its instructions. It says that if standard protocols are unsuccessful, an anti-choking device may be used as a second option. It also advises people to become familiar with a device and its instructions before an emergency.
Is there evidence that Prepared Hero works?
The Prepared Hero product page describes intended use and makes benefit claims, but the sources cited here do not establish product-specific effectiveness. They provide no controlled clinical study, comparative success rate, or independently verified user outcome for Prepared Hero. There is also no named statistic here that can show how often this device clears an obstruction. A claim that the device is easy to use or works across age groups is not a substitute for those data.

That evidence gap does not prove the device cannot work. It does mean a reader cannot use the cited material to judge its likelihood of success, compare it reliably with another brand, or treat the manufacturer’s claims as independent clinical findings. The available sources also do not support a Prepared Hero-versus-LifeVac effectiveness ranking.

What risks has the FDA identified?
The FDA’s communication describes problems reported with anti-choking devices as a category, not a Prepared Hero-specific rate. Reported problems include a device failing to resolve choking because it did not generate suction, bruising around the face, lips, or mouth, and scratches in the back of the throat. The communication does not quantify how often these problems occur or establish that each has occurred with Prepared Hero.
For the FDA, a key risk is delay: using a device before established rescue protocols may postpone critical action. That concern is separate from whether suction can ever remove an obstruction; it is why the recommended order of action matters.

Is Prepared Hero FDA approved or authorized?
“FDA approved” is not interchangeable with registered or listed. The FDA says suction anti-choking devices that claim to remove an obstruction require FDA marketing authorization to be lawfully marketed in the United States. Its March 4, 2026 safety communication stated that one anti-choking device had been authorized for U.S. marketing and distribution as of that date, and directs readers to check the relevant FDA authorization databases by device name. It also warns that establishment registration or device listing alone does not mean a device is approved, cleared, or authorized. The communication does not identify Prepared Hero as the authorized device, and the sources cited here do not establish the product’s authorization status. FDA safety communication
The FDA’s classification page describes a suction anti-choking device as a second-line treatment: a mouthpiece seals over the mouth and a plunger mechanism creates suction after an unsuccessful basic life-support choking protocol. That page defines a device category; it does not establish authorization for the Prepared Hero product. FDA product classification: suction anti-choking device as a second-line treatment
Do not confuse this suction-device category with the FDA’s separate guidance for acute upper-airway obstruction devices that use a raised rounded pad applied to the abdomen. The approximately 80-pound threshold discussed in that guidance concerns that distinct device type; it is not a Prepared Hero recommendation or eligibility threshold. Quick Recap
How to assess the device before an emergency
- Learn established rescue protocols first. The FDA’s recommended starting point is the applicable protocol, including the separate approach for infants.
- Check the device’s exact regulatory status. Search FDA authorization databases by the precise device name; do not treat a registration or listing as authorization.
- Read the instructions and practice familiarity. The FDA notes that finding, assembling, and operating a device can take time, so do not wait until an emergency to learn how it works.
- Keep the evidence limits in view. Prepared Hero’s intended-use and age-range statements come from the manufacturer; the sources cited here do not supply independent product-specific performance or adverse-event rates.
