There is no single best choice for every Indian saver. EPF is tied to eligible employment, VPF adds voluntary employee contributions to that provident-fund arrangement, and PPF is a separate small-savings account. Compare employer contributions, access to your money, tax treatment and the latest officially confirmed rates—not just the headline interest figure.
What is the difference between EPF, VPF and PPF?
EPF: the workplace-linked foundation
Employees covered by an applicable establishment’s provident-fund arrangement contribute through payroll, and the employer may also contribute under the rules that apply to the establishment and wages. That employer contribution is a key part of the comparison: it is not equivalent to putting the same amount into a separate account. See the EPFO for scheme information.
VPF: extra employee contributions through provident fund
Voluntary Provident Fund (VPF) contributions are employee contributions above the statutory EPF rate, made within the provident-fund arrangement. Do not assume the employer matches the voluntary portion: EPFO material says an employer may contribute at the statutory rate or a higher rate, but that does not establish a VPF match for every employee. Contributions on wages above the statutory ceiling have specific conditions and administrative charges; check how the rules apply to your case with your employer or EPFO.
PPF: a separate small-savings account
Public Provident Fund (PPF) is a separate account governed by its own scheme rules, not an add-on to payroll EPF. The National Savings Institute’s consumer guidance describes loans from the third through sixth financial years, annual withdrawals from the seventh financial year, and extension after maturity in five-year blocks. Confirm the current scheme text and your account’s eligibility before making a withdrawal or extension decision.

How should you compare them?
| Factor | EPF | VPF | PPF |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where it sits | Workplace-linked provident-fund arrangement | Additional employee contribution within the provident-fund arrangement | Separate small-savings account |
| Employer contribution | Consider any employer contribution applicable to your arrangement | Do not assume the extra employee contribution is matched | No employer contribution is described in the cited PPF guidance |
| Access | Subject to provident-fund withdrawal conditions | Subject to provident-fund withdrawal conditions | Scheme-specific loans, withdrawals and maturity-extension rules apply |
| Current rate evidence | CBT recommended 8.25% for FY 2025–26; the PIB release said government notification would follow | Uses the provident-fund rate; confirm the applicable notified rate and treatment | The Department of Economic Affairs listed a rate-revision notice dated 30 September 2026, but the rate itself was not visible in the listing |
The EPF rate figure is a Central Board of Trustees recommendation reported by the Press Information Bureau on 2 March 2026, not confirmation in that release that the government had notified it. The release states: “After due deliberations, CBT recommended 8.25 % annual rate of interest to be credited on EPF accumulations in members’ accounts for the financial year 2025-26.The interest rate would be officially notified by the Government of India, following which EPFO would credit the rate of interest into the subscribers’ account.” Check the PIB release and subsequent official notifications for final status. For PPF, check the Department of Economic Affairs’ small-savings notices for the applicable quarter; do not infer a rate from the notice date alone.
What tax rules should you check?
Provident-fund tax treatment is not simply “always tax free.” The Income Tax Department’s guidance describes an annual employee-contribution threshold of ₹2.5 lakh for tax-free interest where the employer also contributes, and ₹5 lakh where there is no employer contribution. The same guidance says recognized provident-fund withdrawal may be exempt after five years of continuous service, subject to specified exceptions and conditions. Your fund type, contribution composition, service history and applicable tax rules matter; consult the Income Tax Department guidance and current law for your circumstances.
The National Savings Institute’s consumer guidance describes PPF interest as free from income tax. Confirm the relevant year’s law and current scheme rules rather than assuming every tax detail is fixed. See the National Savings Institute PPF information.

Start by understanding your EPF benefit
If you are an eligible employee, first establish what your employer contributes under your arrangement and how your own contribution is calculated. The employer contribution can change the comparison with putting additional money into PPF or VPF.

Consider VPF if you want to add through payroll
VPF may suit someone who wants to increase employee contributions within the existing provident-fund arrangement and can accept its access and tax rules. Ask whether any employer match is actually offered; do not treat one as automatic.
Consider PPF if its separate rules suit your needs
PPF may suit a saver who wants a separate account and is comfortable with its scheme-specific access and maturity structure. It is not a like-for-like substitute for payroll EPF, so compare liquidity and tax treatment as well as rates.

Keep near-term cash needs in view
Before committing extra retirement money, account for when you may need it. PPF’s stated loan, withdrawal and extension provisions differ from payroll-linked provident-fund conditions. Do not assume these accounts offer interchangeable access.

What to verify before contributing more
- Ask your employer or EPFO what employer contribution and VPF terms apply to your arrangement, including any conditions for contributions on wages above the statutory ceiling.
- Check the final government notification for the EPF rate rather than treating the CBT recommendation as final.
- Check the official PPF rate notice for the quarter that applies to your account; a notice listing or date alone does not establish the rate.
- Review the applicable tax rules for your contribution amounts, employer contribution, service history and withdrawal plan.
- Compare access rules with your expected cash needs before locking away additional savings.
