Powerball’s April 2024 $1.3 Billion Jackpot: What the Winner Could Take Home

The April 2024 Powerball jackpot’s $1.326 billion annuity and AP-reported $621 million cash option were both pre-tax; the annuity was paid over time.

The $1.3 billion Powerball jackpot was for the April 6, 2024 drawing—not the current jackpot. The advertised annuity was $1.326 billion before taxes; the Associated Press reported a $621 million pre-tax cash option. Neither figure is the winner’s after-tax take-home amount.

What were the two payout choices?

For the April 6, 2024 drawing, the winning ticket was sold in Oregon. The two figures describe different ways to receive the prize, not two estimates of the same immediate payment:

Choice Reported value What it means
Annuity $1.326 billion The advertised pre-tax value paid over the annuity schedule.
Cash option $621 million The pre-tax cash value reported by the Associated Press on April 7, 2024; it is a lump sum rather than the advertised annuity total.

Powerball explains that the cash value generally represents the money in the jackpot pool needed to fund the estimated annuity. Both advertised amounts are before federal and jurisdictional taxes. Powerball’s FAQ describes the available options and payment schedule; the $621 million cash figure is attributed to the Associated Press report.

How does the annuity work?

Powerball says a jackpot winner choosing the annuity receives one immediate payment followed by 29 annual payments that increase by 5% each year. That is 30 payments in all, spread over time. The $1.326 billion advertised value is not a single payment, and the available sources do not give the individual installment amounts for this particular prize.

How much would the winner take home after taxes?

The $621 million reported cash value is pre-tax, not the winner’s net proceeds. The advertised annuity is also before taxes. A reliable personal after-tax figure cannot be calculated from the jackpot amount alone: it depends on the winner’s circumstances and applicable federal and jurisdictional tax rules. The cited sources do not establish a single net amount that would apply to every winner.

Why do sources show different 2024 cash values?

There is a substantial discrepancy in published figures. The Associated Press reported a $621 million cash option in its April 7, 2024 coverage. Powerball’s winner-history page currently lists the April 6 Oregon result as a $1.326 billion annuity and $107.6 million cash. Those cash figures conflict, so the AP figure should be understood as the contemporaneous reported value, not as a number corroborated by the current Powerball history entry. Is the $1.3 billion jackpot current?

No. It refers to the April 6, 2024 drawing. The Illinois Lottery announced on September 15, 2026, that a winner claimed a later $1.04 billion jackpot from the August 12, 2026 drawing and chose the lump sum. That later prize is separate from the 2024 jackpot. Illinois Lottery announcement.
