Polymarket vs. Traditional Sportsbooks: How Odds, Fees, and Risks Compare

Polymarket and traditional sportsbooks quote sports bets differently, so there is no reliable way to judge which is cheaper by comparing a single fee or headline price. Polymarket contracts trade at market prices and may carry an explicit fee; sportsbook odds usually include the bookmaker’s margin. To compare them, match the exact outcome and settlement rules, convert prices to implied probabilities, and account for fees, execution, liquidity, and local availability.

How Polymarket prices differ from sportsbook odds

Polymarket: a tradable event-contract price

A binary Polymarket contract commonly pays a fixed amount—often $1—if its stated outcome occurs. Its price reflects what traders are willing to pay, rather than a probability certified by the platform. A 60-cent price can be read as roughly a 60% market-implied probability before fees and execution costs; it is not proof that the event has an objectively established 60% chance. The CFTC’s overview of prediction markets and event contracts describes these contract mechanics and market-driven prices.

Sportsbooks: odds with margin embedded

Sportsbooks express the payout in odds. The odds imply a probability, but the probabilities across all mutually exclusive outcomes typically add up to more than 100%. That excess is called the overround and is a practical way to identify the margin embedded in the quoted line. It is not a separate fee listed on a typical bet slip.

How to compare prices on the same event

Use the same event, outcome, market type, settlement definition, and point in time. Convert each sportsbook side to its raw implied probability, then total the probabilities across all outcomes. For American odds, the calculations are:

  • Negative odds: absolute odds ÷ (absolute odds + 100).
  • Positive odds: 100 ÷ (odds + 100).

For example, -110 on both sides implies 110 ÷ (110 + 100), or about 52.38%, for each side. Together that is about 104.76%, an overround of roughly 4.76 percentage points. This is an illustrative calculation, not a universal sportsbook margin or a current offer. Legal Sports Report’s explanation of vig and its calculation provides the odds-conversion method and example.

Then compare the sportsbook’s overround with the Polymarket price only after accounting separately for Polymarket’s applicable fee, bid/ask spread, available liquidity, and actual execution price. A theoretical price is not necessarily the price at which you can trade the amount you want. Because cost measures differ, one venue cannot be declared cheaper from an unmatched pair of prices or a single fee figure.

Fees: explicit charges versus embedded margin

Polymarket fees can depend on the market, fee schedule, and whether a trade is a maker or taker. Its Help Center article, dated July 10, 2026, describes taker fees on certain markets and gives this formula: fee = C × feeRate × p × (1 − p), where C is the number of shares and p is the share price. Under that article’s listed structure, makers are not charged fees and the sports taker rate is 0.05. The article says fees are calculated in USDC, are symmetric around a 50% share price, and are rounded to five decimal places; very small trades near extreme prices may round to zero. See Polymarket Help Center: Trading Fees.

The live Polymarket fees page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists multiple sports fee versions and a temporary 0.03 rate for NFL and NCAAF (CFB) from October 1 through October 31, 2026. These are schedule-specific terms, not a single rate that can safely be applied to every sports market. Check the fee shown for the particular market and the current schedule before trading.

By contrast, a sportsbook generally reflects its margin in the odds it offers. In the -110 example above, a bettor risks $110 to win $100 on either side; the combined implied probabilities exceed 100%. That example illustrates how margin works, but the actual margin varies by market and price.

Liquidity, execution, and getting out before settlement

On Polymarket, a displayed price may not be available for the full amount you intend to trade. The CFTC notes that event-contract participants may trade out before settlement at the current market price, while also emphasizing that price and liquidity matter. Some more complex contracts can have comparatively lower liquidity. An exit mechanism does not guarantee a favorable price or a buyer for the desired size.

A sportsbook’s odds are typically fixed for an accepted wager, even though the offered line can move for later wagers. Cash-out offers and rules vary by operator; they should not be assumed to work alike across sportsbooks. Compare executable prices and the specific product’s terms, not just probability estimates.

Settlement rules can change what “the same outcome” means

A market title may not include every condition that determines settlement. CFTC-filed Polymarket US sports contract terms describe a $1 notional contract and 100% margin on the at-risk amount. The point-spread terms refer to final scores declared by the governing body, set out official source hierarchies, and address some postponement and cancellation situations. Qualification-market terms rely on official qualification determinations and describe contingencies such as cancellation, truncation, withdrawal, and disputes.

Those terms apply to the specified Polymarket US contracts, not necessarily to every Polymarket market or sportsbook. Before taking a position, read the rules for the exact contract and check how it handles the outcome, official sources, postponements, cancellations, and other unusual cases. The relevant filings are the Polymarket US sports point-spread contract terms and the Polymarket US qualification contract terms.

Risks and protections depend on the product and location

Both formats expose participants to financial risk. On a prediction market, prices can move, liquidity can be limited, fees can change, and resolution may turn on contract language rather than a casual reading of the game outcome. A sportsbook wager has its own odds, bet acceptance, and settlement terms.

The CFTC describes oversight, rules, and customer protections associated with CFTC-regulated exchanges and intermediaries. That description does not establish that every service branded as a prediction market has the same regulatory status, protections, or availability. Whether a particular product is available or permitted depends on the exact service, product, and jurisdiction. Verify those details and applicable local rules rather than assuming a platform’s access or protections are universal.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Match the contract. Confirm that both prices cover the same event, outcome, market type, and settlement definition.
  2. Convert the odds. Turn each sportsbook price into an implied probability and calculate the overround using all mutually exclusive outcomes.
  3. Check the Polymarket fee. Use the live schedule and the fee applicable to that specific market and trade type.
  4. Check executable prices. Account for the actual bid or ask, spread, available liquidity, and the size you plan to trade.
  5. Read the settlement and exit terms. Check official result sources, unusual-event rules, and how an early exit works for the product.
  6. Verify local status. Confirm the availability and applicable rules for the specific service and product where you live.
