The Leicester-based UK supplier’s October 3, 2026 announcement also points to growth forecasts for flexible packaging, but those figures are estimates—not evidence that future growth has already occurred.
What Polybags Direct says is changing
The company describes a shift in purchasing priorities: businesses still need packaging that works for the item and packing process, but they must also consider material composition, cost and the regulatory environment. The announcement does not provide a buyer survey, market-share data or another quantified measure of this change, so it should be read as the supplier’s market perspective rather than an independently established trend.
A Polybags Direct representative said businesses need packaging that performs reliably while accounting for “size, thickness, application, quantities, cost and increasingly the regulatory environment.” The representative also pointed to the supplier’s range, advice, samples and UK delivery as ways it aims to help customers make those decisions.
How businesses can compare packaging options
Start with the product and packing task, then compare options using current item-level specifications. A low unit price is not necessarily the lowest-cost choice if a bag is the wrong size, unsuitable for the contents or difficult to use on the packing line.

#1 Best Overall
- Dimensions: Check the bag’s usable width and length against the item, including any space needed for a closure or seal.
- Thickness and strength: Match film thickness and stated strength to the load and handling conditions. Confirm puncture and tear performance where those risks matter; the announcement does not provide specifications for individual products.
- Closure and barrier needs: Decide whether the job calls for a resealable closure, self-seal format, freezer bag or vacuum pouch, and verify any required barrier properties with the supplier.
- Material and recycled content: Check the material composition and the evidence available for recycled content rather than relying on a general product description.
- Food contact and other compliance: For food or regulated applications, request the relevant current documentation for the exact product and intended use. Do not assume a product is suitable solely because it is described as a bag for that category.
- Quantity and total cost: Compare order quantities and the resulting cost for the volume you actually need, along with any practical costs of using or storing the packaging.
What size poly bag do I need?
Measure the item and allow enough room to insert and remove it without stretching or stressing the seams. For irregularly shaped goods, check the dimensions at the widest and longest points, and account for the closure method. Polybags Direct says its sizing tools and selected product samples can help buyers assess fit before placing a larger order. The announcement does not state sample prices, how samples are selected or which product sizes are covered, so ask the supplier for those details.
What thickness should a poly bag be?
There is no single thickness that suits every use. The appropriate choice depends on what the bag holds, how it is packed, how it will be handled and whether sharp edges or heavier loads create puncture or tear risks. Use a supplier’s current specification and, where available, sample the packaging under the conditions in which it will be used. Polybags Direct says it offers tools to help assess film thickness, but the announcement does not set out product-specific performance limits.

Which packaging formats does the supplier list?
In its announcement, Polybags Direct lists standard and heavy-duty bags, food-safe bags, gripseal or resealable bags, self-seal bags, freezer bags, mailing bags, garment covers, printed or branded bags, larger bags and vacuum pouches. It also says selected products are available as samples. These are supplier-reported range descriptions, not an independently audited inventory; availability and specifications should be confirmed for the item and order in question.
What the market-growth forecasts do—and do not—show
Polybags Direct’s announcement attributes a forecast to Fortune Business Insights that puts the global flexible plastic packaging market at approximately £133.5 billion in 2026 and around £214 billion by 2034, with a 6.08% compound annual growth rate. The announcement says the pound figures use a USD-to-GBP conversion of approximately 0.758. This is an attributed forecast, not a measurement of realized growth.

Other publishers give estimates with different category labels and time horizons. They should not be combined as though they measure exactly the same market:
| Publisher and category named | Forecast figures | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Fortune Business Insights, as attributed in Polybags Direct’s announcement: global flexible plastic packaging | Approximately £133.5 billion in 2026 to around £214 billion in 2034; 6.08% CAGR. The announcement says its GBP conversion uses approximately 0.758. | An attributed estimate with a stated currency conversion; the underlying forecast is not independently assessed here. |
| Global Market Insights, polybags market | USD 26 billion in 2025, USD 27.9 billion in 2026 and USD 54.5 billion in 2035; approximately 7.7% CAGR. | A forecast for a category labelled “polybags,” which may have a different scope from flexible plastic packaging. |
| Grand View Research, flexible plastic packaging | USD 166.5 billion in 2025 to USD 243.5 billion in 2033; 5.0% CAGR for 2026–2033. | A separate estimate with its own methodology and forecast period. |
The figures indicate that publishers expect growth in packaging categories they define, but different labels, methods and forecast windows prevent a direct like-for-like comparison. Forecasts are projections, not guarantees.

UK Plastic Packaging Tax: verify current obligations
Polybags Direct’s announcement reports that UK Plastic Packaging Tax applies to finished plastic packaging components containing less than 30% recycled plastic, and gives a rate of £228.82 per tonne from April 2026. It also says a business manufacturing or importing at least 10 tonnes of relevant packaging in the applicable period may have registration and reporting obligations. Treat these as figures and descriptions reported by the company, not compliance advice: tax definitions, rates, accounting periods and obligations should be checked against current HMRC guidance before a business acts.
The announcement attributes three further figures to HMRC: 5,142 businesses registered for the tax as of 13 August 2026; 37% of plastic packaging manufactured in or imported into the UK declared taxable during financial year 2025–26; and 51% of the remaining 63% met the 30% recycled-plastic threshold. These are attributed statistics and should not be read as independently verified here.
