Polestar’s latest reported results show rising sales and revenue alongside a substantial gross loss; its 2026 sales growth and upcoming models remain management expectations and plans, not outcomes.
How Polestar developed from a racing team into an EV brand
Polestar traces its origins to Flash Engineering, an independent racing team founded in 1996. The business later developed performance software for Volvo and became Volvo’s performance-tuning partner in 2009. Volvo acquired it in 2015. In 2017, Polestar became a standalone company owned by Volvo Cars and Geely Group, shifting its identity from a performance operation associated with Volvo toward a distinct electric-performance-car brand.
Polestar listed on Nasdaq in 2022. It is headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company describes its operating model as asset-light and draws on industrial capabilities from the wider Volvo Cars and Geely ecosystem. Its December 2025 investor presentation described production in China, the United States and South Korea, with European production planned for the Polestar 7.
Who owns Polestar now?
Geely and Volvo Cars are both important to Polestar’s ownership history and shareholder ecosystem. Polestar’s December 2025 investor presentation named Geely Holding, Volvo Cars and Li Shufu’s private investment company among its significant shareholders, but did not give a post-2026-conversion percentage breakdown. It would therefore be misleading to describe Polestar as wholly owned by either Volvo or Geely, or to state a precise current percentage for either one based on these disclosures.

What changed in 2026
In a capital update dated 1 July 2026, Polestar said Geely Sweden Holdings AB converted approximately USD 300 million of loans and Volvo Cars converted approximately USD 66 million into Polestar equity on 30 June. The company said the parties had converted approximately USD 640 million of debt into equity since the start of 2026. These figures describe debt conversions, not the resulting ownership percentages.
Polestar also said approximately USD 660 million of Volvo Cars’ remaining shareholder loan matures in December 2031. The conversions alter Polestar’s financing and share capital, while the remaining loan is still a future obligation. Neither point alone establishes the company’s full current ownership split or its overall financial position.

What Polestar’s latest reported results say
Polestar’s FY2025 results release, dated 17 April 2026, reported 60,119 retail sales for 2025, up from 44,851 in 2024. Revenue was USD 3,058 million in 2025, compared with USD 2,034 million in 2024. The company also reported a USD 1,084 million gross loss for 2025. In other words, higher sales and revenue did not mean Polestar had achieved gross profitability.
These are company-reported results for the named financial years. They show commercial growth, but the gross loss is an important counterweight when assessing the business. Sales volume and revenue alone do not show whether Polestar can improve profitability, fund its plans and manage its financing needs.

What is Polestar’s outlook for 2026 and beyond?
2026 sales guidance
For 2026, Polestar’s management expected retail sales volume to grow at a low-double-digit rate and described market conditions as more challenging. This is guidance, not a reported result. Whether the company meets it will depend on sales execution and market conditions; the release does not turn the expectation into a guarantee.
Planned models and timing
Polestar’s April 2026 release set out four new cars or model changes over three years. The company’s July 2026 capital update also referred to the Polestar 6 roadster among planned models. Launch dates are plans and may change.

Polestar’s July 2026 company description listed four current models and said the brand operated in 31 markets globally. A model’s inclusion in a company description does not establish its availability in every market, and the release did not provide a market-by-market launch schedule.
How to read older financial targets
In January 2025, Polestar announced targets of 30–35% compound annual retail-sales growth for 2025–2027, positive adjusted EBITDA in 2025, and positive free cash flow after investment in 2027. Those were management targets announced at that time, not reported results. The FY2025 figures above are reported performance; they do not by themselves establish whether the separate adjusted EBITDA or free-cash-flow targets were met.

What to watch when judging Polestar’s prospects
For a personal-finance reader considering the company as a business—or evaluating the durability of the brand behind a vehicle—the outlook hinges on more than new-model announcements. The key questions are whether Polestar can convert product launches into sustained retail sales, improve commercial performance after its reported gross loss, and manage its capital needs and debt maturities. Its asset-light model and links to Volvo Cars and Geely provide access to a broader industrial ecosystem, while also making those relationships and financing arrangements relevant parts of the company’s profile.
Polestar’s 1 July 2026 update said the 2026 loan conversions and extensions of existing facilities improved its capital structure and lengthened its debt maturity profile; that is management’s characterization of the transactions. The disclosed approximately USD 660 million Volvo Cars shareholder loan maturity in December 2031 remains a specific financing date to keep in view. No independent analyst forecast is established by the cited company materials, so the sales outlook and product schedule here should be read as company guidance and plans rather than an outside assessment.
