Plymouth Argyle’s later talks with a prospective investor did not produce a confirmed completed deal in the available reporting. The club had previously sold a 20% stake to US-based Argyle Green, LLC for £4 million in 2022, with Simon Hallett retaining majority control. The supplied headline’s claim that Hallett was urged to find an investor “ASAP,” and the phrase “A lot of damage has been done,” cannot be tied to a verified speaker or original source.
Who invested in Plymouth Argyle?
In 2022, US-based Argyle Green, LLC bought a 20% stake in Plymouth Argyle for £4 million, according to BBC Sport’s report of 4 August 2022. Hallett remained the club’s majority owner. The club said the proceeds would support infrastructure projects; Hallett identified possible work involving the Mayflower stand, the training ground, and facilities for the academy and women’s team. The stated purpose was infrastructure, not a documented commitment to a particular player budget.
Was Simon Hallett looking for another investor?
Later reporting described discussions with a prospective investor, but does not establish that a transaction was completed. A 2025 Yahoo Sports report republishing Plymouth Live coverage said Hallett had discussed a prospective investor at a supporters’ event. It reported that he subsequently said negotiations had taken too long and that information required by Argyle and the EFL had not been forthcoming. Read the Yahoo Sports/Plymouth Live report.
The report quotes Hallett as saying negotiations had taken too long and that he no longer believed news of a new investor was imminent. That is a secondary account of his statement; the available report does not establish the proposed investor’s identity, funding, valuation, ownership share, or other deal terms.

What safeguards did Hallett describe for the 2022 deal?
In 2022, Hallett said he intended to retain control and that any increase in Argyle Green’s stake would be gradual, after the investors demonstrated commitment to the club’s interests. BBC Sport also reported that proof of funds in Argyle Green’s bank account was a precondition of that deal. These were reported safeguards for the completed 2022 transaction; they do not establish the terms or checks applied to the later proposal.

Is the “A lot of damage has been done” quote verified?
No. The phrase in the supplied headline could not be connected to a verified speaker or primary source. Nor could the exact source behind the headline’s claim that Hallett was urged to find a new investor “ASAP” be identified. Without the original article or interview, those words should not be attributed to Hallett, a supporter, or anyone else as an established quote.
A July 2025 RealEFL opinion article said the club had pulled the plug on a proposed deal and discussed infrastructure, sustainability, and responsible governance as long-term aims. That is the publication’s analysis, not an official club statement or independent confirmation of the deal’s terms. Read The RealEFL’s opinion article.
