Sony’s Game & Network Services (G&NS) segment generated ¥4.3 trillion in FY2023 revenue, up 17% year over year; GamesBeat reported that as $27.5 billion. But Sony’s forecast at the time put FY2024 G&NS revenue at ¥4.2 trillion, about 2% lower. These figures describe an actual year followed by a forecast—not a decline that had already happened. The apparent contradiction reflects a changing mix of game sales, add-on content, hardware and network services, alongside Sony’s expectations for the PS5’s console cycle.
What the figures measure
The $27.5 billion headline refers to Sony’s broad G&NS business, not PS5 console sales alone. Sony’s annual report describes the segment’s hardware and other category as including home consoles, packaged and bundled software, peripherals, and first-party software sold for third-party platforms. G&NS also includes game and network-related activity, so segment revenue should not be read as a count of consoles or as operating profit.
GamesBeat reported FY2023 revenue of ¥4.3 trillion, up 17%, and rendered the amount as $27.5 billion. The dollar figure is a reported conversion; GamesBeat did not state its exchange-rate method. Sony’s FY2024 estimate, as reported at the time, was ¥4.2 trillion, approximately 2% below FY2023.
Why revenue grew in FY2023
GamesBeat attributed the FY2023 increase to higher sales of non-first-party games and add-on content, as well as foreign-exchange effects. Its report said total game sales reached 286.4 million, with first-party titles accounting for 14%; it also reported that first-party sales fell 9% year over year. These game-unit figures are distinct from G&NS revenue: they count games sold, not yen earned, and should be treated as GamesBeat’s reporting rather than as independently verified earnings-table figures.

The mix matters. Revenue can rise even as one part of the business weakens if other sources contribute more. In this case, the reported FY2023 strength in non-first-party titles and add-on content, together with currency effects, accompanied the segment’s growth despite the reported drop in first-party sales.
Why Sony forecast lower FY2024 revenue
Sony’s forecast reflected different expectations for the following fiscal year. GamesBeat reported that Sony expected fewer console and first-party sales, while third-party game sales and network services—particularly PlayStation Plus—were expected to increase. Those expected gains were not enough, in Sony’s outlook, to prevent a modest decline in total G&NS sales.

Sony’s corporate report also described PS5 sales volume as expected to decline gradually as the console moved into the second half of its cycle. A lower unit-sales outlook does not mean every PlayStation revenue source must fall: software, add-on content and subscriptions follow different patterns from console shipments. Nor does a forecast establish what the segment ultimately earned in FY2024.
Revenue, game sales and console shipments are different measures
| Measure | FY2023 actual or reported figure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| G&NS segment revenue | ¥4.3 trillion, up 17% year over year; GamesBeat also reported a $27.5 billion conversion | Revenue across Sony’s broad gaming and network-services segment, not console sales alone. |
| Game sales | 286.4 million total; 14% first-party, according to GamesBeat | A unit measure for games sold, not revenue or profit. |
| PS5 console sales | 20.8 million consoles in FY2023, according to GamesBeat | A hardware-unit measure. GamesBeat reported this was below Sony’s revised 21 million target and its initial 25 million goal. |
| FY2024 G&NS outlook | ¥4.2 trillion, approximately 2% lower than FY2023, as forecast at the time | A forward-looking estimate, not FY2024’s eventual reported result. |
These measures answer different questions. Segment revenue tracks money generated across a wide business; console shipments and game sales count units. None of the figures above is operating income, which would reflect expenses as well as revenue.

What the forecast did—and did not—signal
The forecast described an expected, gradual slowdown in PS5 volume as the console entered the second half of its cycle, combined with lower anticipated first-party sales. At the same time, Sony expected growth in third-party games and network services to cushion the pressure. Read together, the figures point to a change in revenue mix and console-cycle expectations, not a claim that all PlayStation activity was collapsing.
