When Sony announced its agreement to acquire Firewalk Studios on April 20, 2023, the studio was making an unnamed original AAA multiplayer game for PlayStation 5 and PC. PlayStation revealed the game’s name—Concord—on May 24, 2023. Sony later took Concord offline in September 2024 and announced Firewalk’s closure and the game’s discontinuation the following month.
What Sony announced in April 2023
Sony Interactive Entertainment said it had entered into an agreement to acquire Bellevue-based Firewalk Studios from ProbablyMonsters. The studio, formed in 2018, was developing “an original AAA multiplayer game for PlayStation®5 (PS5™) and PC,” according to Sony’s April 20, 2023 announcement. The announcement did not name the game.
The acquisition followed an earlier relationship: PlayStation and Firewalk had announced a publishing partnership for a new original multiplayer intellectual property on April 22, 2021. Sony was therefore already involved with the project before it agreed to acquire the studio.
What game was Firewalk making?
PlayStation identified the game as Concord on May 24, 2023. In the reveal, Firewalk Game Director Ryan Ellis described it as a new player-versus-player multiplayer first-person shooter for PS5 and PC. The title and genre were not disclosed in the April acquisition announcement; they came in the later PlayStation reveal.

Why did PlayStation acquire Firewalk?
Sony presented the acquisition as part of its investment in live-service games and its effort to expand where players could access PlayStation titles. It said Firewalk would collaborate with teams including Bungie and Haven Interactive Studios. These were Sony’s stated rationale and plans, not a guarantee of commercial success.
Sony also said Firewalk’s management would continue to run the studio’s day-to-day operations in collaboration with PlayStation Studios’ External Development team. The acquisition announcement did not disclose the purchase price.

What happened to Concord and Firewalk?
September 2024: Concord went offline
On September 3, 2024, PlayStation said it would stop sales of Concord and take the game offline beginning September 6. The update also explained how purchasers could receive refunds. Sony said it was evaluating options for the game in its September 3 update.
October 2024: Firewalk closed and Concord discontinued
In an October 2024 PlayStation Studios update, Sony said it had decided to take Concord offline because some aspects of the game did not attract enough players. The update announced Firewalk’s closure and the game’s discontinuation. That is Sony’s explanation; the official materials cited here do not provide a sourced player count or sales total.
