Play Ventures raised $135 million for its second fund, Fund II, in 2021. The $140 million figure belongs to Fund III, announced in 2024—not to the second fund. The discrepancy appears in the headline of a 2024 GamesBeat article, while its body identifies the $140 million vehicle as Fund III and Fund II as $135 million.
How much did Play Ventures raise for its second fund?
Play Ventures closed Fund II at $135 million in April 2021, according to contemporaneous coverage by Game Developer and PocketGamer.biz. The firm said the close brought assets under management across its first two funds to $175 million.
That $175 million figure refers to the combined AUM of Funds I and II at the time of the 2021 announcement. It is not the size of Fund II alone.
Why do some reports say $140 million?
The $140 million raise was Play Ventures’ third fund. GamesBeat’s 2024 article has a headline that calls it a second fund, but the article body identifies it as Fund III and says Fund II raised $135 million. The firm’s News & Highlights page likewise lists the $135 million announcement as Fund II and the later $140 million announcement as Fund III.

How does Play Ventures describe its scope now?
The firm’s current website describes a broader focus that includes game studios, consumer apps, and related business-to-business infrastructure and services. That description reflects its broader present-day scope; it should not be substituted for the stated remit of Fund II in the 2021 announcement.
In 2021, Play Ventures said: “With Fund II, we continue to believe that gaming will be the most impactful and dominant form of entertainment in the 21st century.” The statement was attributed to the company, not to a named executive.
