Play Ventures announced a plan to raise a $30 million fund for investments in game startups around the world. That figure refers to the original announcement, not the firm’s current fund size: Play Ventures later described its debut fund as oversubscribed at $40 million and announced a $135 million Fund II.

What did Play Ventures announce?

Play Ventures’ official news archive says the firm was raising a $30 million fund to invest in game startups globally. The announcement named Harri Manninen, based in Helsinki, and Henric Suuronen, based in Singapore, as the fund’s leaders.

The announcement was also covered at the time by GamesBeat. Its coverage described Manninen’s interest in startups combining gaming with other technologies, including artificial intelligence.

How does the $30 million figure fit the later funds?

The original $30 million plan is historical. In its archive, Play Ventures later described its debut fund as oversubscribed at $40 million and announced Fund II as a $135 million fund. The firm’s Fund II announcement said it would invest in game makers and entrepreneurs around the world. These are company-reported amounts; they should not be read as interchangeable fund totals or as a current figure for all assets managed by the firm. The sources do not establish the original fund’s exact closing date.

What does Play Ventures invest in now?

Play Ventures’ current website describes its early-stage focus as game studios, consumer apps, and related business-to-business infrastructure and services, with a global remit. That scope is broader than game studios alone. The firm’s portfolio page includes businesses in areas such as games, payments, financing, advertising, and development or creator tools.

Those categories describe the firm’s stated investment activity; they do not, by themselves, establish the performance or results of its investments.
