In fall 2026, BYU senior defender Emma Neff is doing both: competing in Division I women’s soccer while beginning her first year at BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School. She once assumed she would have to choose between a fifth season and law school. After months of deliberation and prayer, she began exploring a way to pursue both—and said taking steps toward that plan brought her peace.
How Neff decided not to choose
Neff had considered law as a possible career for years. Studying the Constitution and Declaration of Independence during her junior year helped move law school from an idea toward a goal. But the timing seemed to present a choice: play a fifth year of soccer or start law school.
She spent months thinking and praying about the decision, then investigated whether she could combine the commitments. “The second I started taking steps towards doing both, I just felt this immeasurable sense of peace,” she told the Deseret News in a feature published Oct. 5, 2026.
That decision is a personal account, not a template for every athlete or law school. Neff said professors, the dean, her coach, teammates and classmates helped make her arrangement possible.

What a law-school-and-soccer week looks like
The Deseret News feature describes a schedule organized around classes, training and the team calendar. Neff’s classes ran Monday through Thursday, which gave her a cushion before Friday travel for road games. Her account breaks the week into several kinds of work:
- Classes: Morning and early-afternoon law classes, followed by coursework in subjects including torts, contracts and criminal law.
- Soccer: Late-afternoon practice and film study during the season.
- Travel and games: Road trips could begin on Fridays, making the Monday-through-Thursday class pattern relevant to her team schedule.
- Evening study: After soccer activities, she continued law-school work at night.
Neff gave a rough sense of the daily split: “So about three hours of my day are now spent doing soccer things.” That is her approximation, not an audited daily time log.

How demanding is the combined workload?
Keyan Norman, a former offensive lineman at Southern Utah University and BYU who later attended BYU Law, estimated that a first-year law student typically spends 50 to 60 hours a week in class and outside study. He estimated Neff’s combined commitments at 80 to 100 hours per week, calling it “a seriously demanding job.” Those figures are Norman’s estimates as reported by the Deseret News, not measured time logs for Neff or a universal law-school workload benchmark.
The estimates help explain why the schedule depends on more than personal discipline: class timing, team travel, academic support and coordination with coaches all matter. Neff’s report of help from people at BYU describes the support around her specific arrangement; it does not establish that another school or team would offer the same flexibility.

Why BYU felt like the right fit
Neff said BYU appealed to her because of its combined focus on faith and academic excellence. She also recalled law students and a professor singing “Lord, I Would Follow Thee” in a lecture hall before classes began, a moment she described as among the most spiritually strengthening she had experienced. Those are Neff’s reflections on her own faith and school choice.
Her academic path included an undergraduate BYU degree in English with an emphasis in professional writing, according to the Deseret News. BYU Athletics’ 2026 roster lists English as her major and identifies her as a senior defender from Salt Lake City, Utah, and an Olympus High School graduate. The roster also records a 4.0 cumulative high-school GPA.

Her soccer path and what comes next
Neff’s position history reflects a gradual shift: BYU lists her as a midfielder in 2022, when she had a medical redshirt, and in 2023; as a midfielder/defender in 2024; and as a defender in 2025 and 2026. A BYUradio episode published Dec. 17, 2025, offers earlier context about redshirting, injuries, moving into a starting role and contributing during a postseason run, without supplying detailed performance statistics. Her younger sister Anna was also a BYU soccer teammate in the 2026 season, the Deseret News reported.
Neff had not settled on a legal specialty in the Oct. 5, 2026 feature. “Right now, I feel like I’m learning so many things that interest me — but I haven’t felt that there was one area of the law that I’m set on at the moment.” Her immediate story is not about having every career choice mapped out; it is about pursuing law school while continuing a final season of college soccer.
