How purity and color differ
Platinum purity
In the United States, FTC guidance says an item called simply “platinum” should be at least 95% pure platinum. A 950 stamp is a common way to express that proportion. Ask the seller for the written purity description and, if the item is an alloy, which other metals it contains.
White-gold karat and alloy
White gold is not pure gold: it combines gold with other metals to change its color and properties. A 14K mark means 14 of 24 parts are gold; an 18K mark means 18 of 24 parts are gold. The remaining alloy metals can vary. Ask whether the piece contains nickel or palladium rather than assuming all white gold has the same recipe.

Natural white versus a rhodium finish
Platinum’s silver-white color comes from the metal itself. White gold may be rhodium-plated to create a bright white surface. That coating is not permanent: as it wears, the underlying white-gold alloy may show through differently. The FTC cautions that jewelry coatings may not be permanent.
Weight, durability and design
Platinum is denser than gold, so comparable platinum jewelry generally feels heavier. GIA says platinum is denser and stronger than gold. White gold is more malleable and can be easier to form into intricate designs, according to Jewelers Mutual. These general differences do not establish a universal hardness ranking for every white-gold alloy or predict how a specific ring will hold up. Ask the jeweler about the exact alloy, setting and repair needs of the design you are considering.

Upfront price and maintenance costs
White gold generally has the lower purchase price, while platinum commonly costs more upfront because it is denser and used at high purity. There is no dependable fixed dollar premium: retailer, design, metal weight and market conditions all affect the finished-ring price. Compare rings with similar designs, weights and stone settings rather than comparing metal prices in isolation.
White gold can also carry a future maintenance expense if it has a rhodium finish. Jewelers Mutual reports a replating interval of five to ten years, but that is general guidance, not a schedule or guarantee; wear and care affect how often a piece needs service. Ask the retailer what replating costs and whether it is included in any service plan. Platinum does not need replating to preserve its natural white color.

Which metal is better for sensitive skin?
Platinum’s high purity may appeal to people concerned about skin sensitivity. White gold’s nickel content varies by alloy, and a rhodium coating may be present. Neither metal guarantees a reaction-free experience for every wearer.
