Plarium announced an agreement on August 2, 2021, to acquire Helsinki-based mobile-game studio Futureplay, aiming to expand its portfolio and casual-games pipeline. The companies did not disclose the purchase price. Futureplay later joined MTG in 2025 as part of MTG’s acquisition of Plarium.
What Plarium announced
Plarium said it had agreed to acquire Futureplay, a Finnish studio known for casual mobile games. Plarium’s announcement is dated August 8, 2021, but the release itself is datelined August 2; the company said it expected the deal to close by the end of August, subject to closing conditions. Futureplay’s portfolio included Merge Gardens, Battlelands Royale and Idle Farming Empire. Plarium said the studio had released six games that had been played by more than 140 million users and had 2.1 million followers across social-media and community channels. Those are figures from Plarium’s 2021 announcement, not current audience measures.
Why Plarium said it wanted Futureplay
Plarium described the deal as a way to diversify its studio portfolio and strengthen its position in casual games. Its stated plan was to combine its development infrastructure and marketing capabilities with Futureplay’s team and games, share expertise and resources, expand Futureplay’s catalog, and introduce new casual titles. Futureplay CEO and co-founder Jami Laes said the collaboration could help improve existing games and create new titles while maintaining a creative development environment. These statements explain the companies’ intentions; they do not establish that the projected benefits were achieved.
What the deal price and timing reveal
The purchase price was not disclosed in Plarium’s announcement. GamesBeat’s contemporaneous coverage also reported that the companies had not disclosed the price. Without a public figure, the deal’s value cannot be assessed from these sources.

How to read the audience and studio figures
Futureplay’s current games page says its six games have reached more than 120 million players, while Plarium’s 2021 announcement reported more than 140 million users. Current company profiles also give different staffing descriptions: Plarium says its Helsinki team works globally with more than 60 professionals, while MTG describes about 70 employees. What the acquisition means—and what it does not establish
The transaction reflects Plarium’s stated effort to add casual mobile games and Futureplay’s development team to a business Plarium described in terms of development infrastructure and marketing reach. The available statements explain the intended strategic fit, but do not quantify its financial impact, disclose the purchase price, or demonstrate that the anticipated catalog growth and shared capabilities produced specific results.
