Rogers and Telus advertised the Pixel 9 at $0 down and $0 per month, but those offers involved eligibility requirements and a two-year device-return arrangement. Freedom Mobile’s reported $4 device payment paired with a cheaper plan produced the lowest historical combined monthly cost.
The original MobileSyrup article is now unavailable, so its prices should be treated as historical—not as current carrier offers. See the archived deal reference.

What the original “$0” Pixel 9 deal meant
A $0 carrier price can describe several different things:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- $0 down: nothing paid upfront for the device.
- $0 monthly payment: the advertised device instalment is zero, often because of credits or a deferred amount.
- $0 after trade-in: credits depend on an eligible phone and its condition.
- $0 if returned: you avoid a final amount only by returning the device in acceptable condition.
- $0 total cost: a much broader claim that must include the plan, taxes, fees and any final ownership payment.
The 2024 Canadian offers should not be described as a free Pixel 9 that every customer could keep. A qualifying wireless plan—and, for some offers, returning the phone after two years—was part of the economics.

Historical Canadian comparison
The following figures summarize the November 2024 promotion as reported at the time. They are not verified September 2026 prices or availability.
| Carrier | Reported device payment | Reported qualifying plan | Historical takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rogers | $0 down, $0 monthly | About $75 monthly after autopay | Lowest device payment, but return terms and a relatively expensive plan mattered. |
| Telus | $0 down, $0 monthly | About $75 monthly after autopay | Similar $0 device offer with a two-year return arrangement. |
| Bell | About $1 monthly | Comparable major-carrier plan pricing | Less attractive total economics in the original comparison. |
| Freedom Mobile | About $4 monthly | About $45 monthly | Reported combined cost of roughly $49 monthly; the apparent value winner, subject to its terms. |
| Koodo, Fido and Virgin | About $15 monthly | Plans from about $50 monthly | Roughly $65 combined monthly, with potentially less data and fewer network features. |
At the reported prices, a $49 monthly Freedom combination would total approximately $1,176 over 24 months before taxes and fees. A $75 plan with a $0 device payment would total approximately $1,800 before taxes and fees. That does not make Freedom universally better: coverage, roaming, data, hotspot allowances, eligibility and the amount required to keep the phone can change the result.
How to calculate the real cost

24-month cost = device payments + required plan payments + taxes and fees + activation charges − confirmed discounts and credits.
Then calculate ownership separately:
- Return scenario: include the cost of service and any required return, damage or missing-device charge.
- Keep scenario: add the final purchase amount or remaining device balance.
- Trade-in scenario: subtract only credits you are certain you will receive after inspection.
Taxes may be charged on the full retail price rather than the promotional device payment. Also check connection fees, SIM or eSIM charges, shipping, protection plans and whether the first bill arrives before promotional credits appear.
Ownership and return risks
Before accepting a $0 offer, read the carrier agreement for the exact answer to these questions:

- Do you own the phone immediately, finance it, or receive it with a deferred return obligation?
- What amount is due if you keep it after 24 months?
- What condition must the phone be in when returned?
- What happens if it is cracked, badly scratched, lost or stolen?
- What is the return deadline?
- Do remaining device payments become due if you cancel service?
- Are future credits cancelled if you downgrade, upgrade or change carriers?
Promotional credits commonly require the customer to keep both the device-payment agreement and a qualifying plan active. Verizon’s support documentation illustrates this general mechanism—credits can take one or two billing cycles to appear and may stop when eligibility ends—but its rules are U.S.-specific and do not establish the terms of any Canadian carrier. Review Verizon’s example of the mechanism, then rely on the Canadian agreement for a Canadian purchase.
Carrier-by-carrier considerations
Rogers and Telus
The historical appeal was the $0 monthly device payment. The trade-off was the cost of the required plan and the two-year return structure. Confirm whether the offer is available for a new activation, an upgrade or only selected customers, and whether the device can be kept by paying a final amount.
Bell
The reported payment was approximately $1 monthly. That small device charge did not automatically make Bell cheaper because the plan and final ownership terms were also relevant. Verify whether the arrangement is financing or a return-based program.

Freedom Mobile
The reported offer combined a roughly $4 monthly device payment with a plan around $45 monthly, including a referenced 75GB 5G option. Its historical combined estimate of about $49 monthly was the strongest value on the figures reported, but coverage, roaming, network performance, current data allowances and stock must be checked before choosing it.
Koodo, Fido and Virgin
These brands reportedly charged about $15 monthly for the device while offering plans from roughly $50 monthly. The approximately $65 combined bill could be preferable to a major-carrier plan for a moderate-data user, but compare 5G access, speed tiers, roaming, hotspot allowances, financing balances and whether the phone is yours at the end.

For a carrier trade-in, confirm the eligible models, minimum condition, cracked-screen rules, payoff requirement, shipping deadline and whether credits stop after a plan change. Distinguish an immediate credit from monthly bill credits: the latter can disappear if you cancel, upgrade or leave the qualifying plan.
Would buying unlocked be better?
An unlocked Pixel lets you change providers without tying the phone to a carrier’s promotional credits or return deadline. Google says an unlocked Pixel can be used with the carrier or plan of your choice, while SIM and eSIM support and network features remain dependent on the specific model and carrier. Check Google’s product information.
Compare the unlocked phone’s purchase price plus 24 months of service against the carrier’s complete cost. Include warranty, resale value, financing interest if any, trade-in opportunity and the value of being able to switch to a cheaper plan. A refurbished Pixel 9 may be cheaper, but verify the seller, warranty, return policy, battery condition and unlocked status.

Checklist before signing
- Confirm the exact storage, colour and stock status.
- Write down the device payment, plan price and full term.
- Ask whether the phone is yours to keep or must be returned.
- Record the keep amount and return deadline.
- Calculate taxes, activation fees and the first bill.
- Confirm trade-in eligibility, condition rules and shipping deadlines.
- Ask when credits begin and what cancels them.
- Check the cost of cancelling, upgrading or changing plans early.
- Compare coverage, roaming, data, 5G and hotspot limits.
- Compare the full 24-month carrier cost with unlocked or refurbished options.
Who should choose each type of deal?
- Lowest historical combined bill: Freedom’s reported 2024 offer, if its current plan and terms still suit you.
- Lowest advertised device payment: Rogers or Telus historically, but only after confirming the return obligation.
- Flexible switching: an unlocked phone paired with the plan you actually want.
- No trade-in: an offer with a clearly stated device balance and no conditional credits.
- Long-term ownership: compare the final keep price, not just the monthly headline.
- Deal to avoid: any $0 offer whose required plan, return risk or cancellation penalty is unclear.
The Bottom Line
The Pixel 9 was advertised as low as $0 per month at several Canadian carriers during Black Friday 2024, but that was not the same as free ownership—and it is not confirmed as a live offer in 2026. Choose only after comparing the required plan, 24-month cost, taxes, trade-in conditions and the amount due to keep the phone. For maximum flexibility, an unlocked or properly warranted refurbished Pixel may be the safer benchmark.
