The Pinterest Lens-powered tool let eligible U.S. shoppers use an iOS or Android phone to place virtual furniture and home décor in their rooms before clicking through to a retailer’s website.
The feature was designed to make online furniture shopping more visual, but it was never a guarantee of exact size, color, availability, delivery timing, or fit. Pinterest’s current documentation is archived and warns that Try On may not be available in every area, so shoppers should treat access as product-, account-, device-, and region-dependent.

What Pinterest launched
Pinterest’s Try On for Home Decor extended the company’s existing augmented-reality shopping approach beyond beauty products such as lipstick and eyeshadow. Instead of only viewing a furniture image in a Pin, users could place an eligible product model into a live camera view of their room.
Pinterest said the January 2022 launch included more than 80,000 shoppable Pins in the United States. That was Pinterest’s reported launch figure, not a current count of AR-enabled products.

Pinterest’s announcement described the initial rollout as available in the United States on the Pinterest iOS and Android apps, with global availability planned for the future.
How Try On for Home Decor worked
- Open an eligible furniture or décor Product Pin in the Pinterest mobile app.
- Tap “Try in your space.”
- Allow Pinterest to use the phone’s camera if prompted.
- Point the camera at the room and place the virtual item in the desired location.
- Move, resize, rotate, and inspect the object in 3D.
- Review the product information, including the listed price when available.
- Tap through to the retailer’s website to complete the purchase.
Pinterest was the discovery and referral platform, not the seller. The checkout took place on the merchant’s website.

What shoppers needed
The experience required the Pinterest mobile app, camera permission, and a Try On-enabled Pin. On Android, Pinterest’s help documentation specified the need for Google Play Services for AR.
Not every furniture image was interactive. Pinterest’s archived Try On guidance says users should look for a Try On button or a cube icon in the Pin’s close-up view. If neither appears, the Pin may simply be a standard image.

What AR could help you judge
Virtual placement can be useful for an early shopping decision. It may help you assess:
- Whether a sofa, table, chair, lamp, mirror, rug, or decorative object has the right general shape for the room.
- Whether the item’s visual style works with nearby furniture.
- How the piece looks from different orientations.
- Whether the product is worth investigating on the retailer’s site.
For personal-finance purposes, that can reduce the risk of buying an item simply because it looked appealing in an isolated product photo. It may also help shoppers narrow a shortlist before committing money to a large purchase.

What AR could not prove
AR placement was a visualization aid—not a substitute for measurements or a physical inspection. Before buying, check:
- The product’s exact width, depth, height, and weight.
- Doorway, hallway, stairwell, elevator, and room clearances.
- Space needed for drawers, doors, reclining mechanisms, and walking paths.
- Material, finish, stitching, hardware, cushion firmness, and texture.
- Whether lighting or screen color has changed the item’s apparent color.
- Assembly requirements, delivery charges, lead time, and return costs.
A virtual model may simplify texture, reflectivity, wood grain, or other physical details. Even if an item appears to fit on screen, it may not pass through the front door or leave enough usable space in the room.
Is Pinterest’s furniture AR feature still available?
There is no sound basis for promising universal availability in 2026. Pinterest still has help documentation describing virtual placement, but the relevant page is explicitly archived and warns that Try On may not be available in a user’s area. Pinterest’s current shopping guidance also says that some shopping features may not appear for every account.

Availability can therefore depend on the product Pin, retailer participation, account, device, operating system, and geography. The original announcement covered a U.S. rollout; it did not establish worldwide availability at launch.
If Try On does not appear:
- Use the Pinterest mobile app rather than desktop web.
- Update the app.
- Check Pinterest’s camera permission in the phone’s settings.
- On Android, check whether Google Play Services for AR is installed and supported.
- Try another Pin from one of the named launch retailers.
- Look specifically for the Try On button or cube icon.
- If it still does not appear, assume the item, account, device, or region may be unsupported.
You can still use Pinterest’s ordinary product discovery tools, including visual search, “Shop similar,” “Shop the look,” and shopping from boards, where those features are available.

After a shopper leaves Pinterest, the retailer controls the transaction. Prices, inventory, product descriptions, delivery terms, assembly options, and return policies can change after a Pin is created.
Pinterest’s shopping guidance says Pinterest does not handle merchant disputes, shipping, tracking, refunds, or product problems. Contact the retailer for an order-status issue, damaged item, incorrect listing, return, or refund.
Before paying, confirm whether the item is sold directly by the named retailer or by a marketplace seller. Also check whether the displayed price excludes delivery, assembly, taxes, customization, or other charges.

How this differs from Pinterest’s newer AI shopping products
Pinterest’s later shopping announcements should not be confused with AR Try On for Home Decor. Pinterest Assistant was described as a separate beta AI shopping product for U.S. users ages 18 and older, focused on personalized discovery.
In 2026, Pinterest also described Ask Pinterest as a limited-access experiment involving conversational and multimodal shopping assistance, including complex decisions such as furnishing a room over time. That does not establish that Ask Pinterest is an AR replacement for the earlier furniture-placement tool.
How Pinterest compared the feature
Pinterest said users were five times more likely to purchase from Try On-enabled Pins than from standard Pins. That is an internal Pinterest comparison. It should not be treated as an independently verified result or proof that AR itself caused the difference.
Bottom line for furniture shoppers
Pinterest’s 2022 AR expansion was important because it connected inspiration-led browsing with a more concrete preview of furniture and décor in a shopper’s room. But the feature was limited to eligible Pins and an initially U.S.-focused rollout, and its current availability is uncertain.
