Its price reflects a particular combination: its color and size, distinctive kite-shaped brilliant cut, JAR mounting, and associations with French royalty. Those historical associations are not a fully documented chain of ownership, and the sale price is not a reliable guide to what another pink diamond should cost.
What sold, and what does “over $14 million” mean?
Christie’s reported a realized price of $13,980,000 for the Marie-Thérèse Pink at its Magnificent Jewels auction in New York on June 17, 2025. The headline’s “over $14 million” is a rounded figure; the reported result was just under that amount. Christie’s described the ring as a 10.38-carat fancy purple-pink diamond in a kite-shaped brilliant cut, mounted by JAR. Christie’s sale announcement identified the result as a world auction record for a fancy purple-pink diamond and for a JAR jewel.
That wording matters: it is a record within those categories, not a claim that this is the highest price ever paid at auction for any pink diamond.

Why this particular diamond drew attention
Its color and size
The stone weighs 10.38 carats and is graded fancy purple-pink. A color description is more informative than simply calling a diamond “pink”: hue and modifiers, tone, and saturation all distinguish one colored diamond from another. GIA’s consumer guide describes fancy-color grades ranging from Faint to Fancy Deep, with Fancy Intense and Fancy Vivid indicating strong saturation. Its cut and mounting
Christie’s identifies the shape as a kite-shaped brilliant cut and the mounting as the work of JAR, the jewelry designer. Shape and setting contribute to how a jewel looks and to its identity as a specific auction lot; neither makes one cut universally better than another. Here, the cut and designer mounting are part of what made this ring distinctive, alongside the diamond itself.

Its historical associations
The stone is associated with Marie-Thérèse of France and the French royal family. GIA says it is believed to have originated in India in the mid-1700s and is thought to have passed from Marie Antoinette to her daughter, Duchess Marie-Thérèse of Angoulême, and later to her niece. Christie’s likewise presents the royal connection as surrounded by mystery. The available accounts do not establish an unbroken chain of ownership, so the history should be described as an association rather than settled provenance. How natural pink diamonds get their color
Pink diamonds are real diamonds, and their color can arise from changes in the diamond crystal rather than from a trace element. In a 2018 account of its research, GIA reported that 99.5% of pink-diamond color in its studied sample was associated with distortion in the crystal structure. The sample came from GIA’s database of more than 90,000 pink and related colored diamonds graded from 2008 through 2016; it is not a census of every pink diamond.

GIA researchers described a broad absorption band centered at 550 nanometers, but said the actual atomic structure of the defect responsible for the color remained unknown. That finding explains a leading mechanism for natural pink color without implying that every stone’s origin can be determined by appearance alone. GIA’s research on pink-diamond color describes the sample and the limits of what is known.
Laboratory-grown pink diamonds also exist. GIA describes irradiation followed by heating as one common method of producing pink color in lab-grown diamonds. A sales description or visual inspection is not conclusive evidence of whether a diamond is natural, laboratory-grown, or treated; GIA says rigorous gemological analysis is used to assess origin, and additional testing is essential in some cases.

Was it the most expensive pink diamond ever sold?
No. GIA’s consumer guide reports that the CTF Pink Star sold for $71.2 million in 2017 and the Williamson Pink Star for $57.7 million in 2022. The Marie-Thérèse Pink’s result is notable for the narrower fancy purple-pink and JAR-jewel records Christie’s claimed. GIA’s guide provides the comparison figures.
Published figures for the Williamson Pink Star differ by source: Sotheby’s reports $57.5 million, while GIA reports $57.7 million. Those figures should be attributed to their respective sources rather than combined into a single supposedly exact amount. Sotheby’s also describes the CTF Pink Star as a 59.60-carat Fancy Vivid Pink, Internally Flawless diamond. Sotheby’s diamond auction overview provides those details.

Why one auction result is not a price guide
A high-profile auction result reflects the particular stone, its documentation and associations, the mounting, the bidders competing at that sale, and the terms of the transaction. It does not establish a typical retail price or a dependable value for another pink diamond. Even two diamonds with the same broad color label can differ in hue, saturation, size, clarity, cut, natural or laboratory-grown origin, treatment, and provenance.
For personal-finance purposes, the key distinction is between an exceptional auction result and an ordinary purchase decision. The Marie-Thérèse Pink’s sale does not establish that pink diamonds generally appreciate, make suitable investments, or can be resold for a similar amount. Auction-house commentary about market demand is not an independent appraisal of a specific stone.
What to check when comparing pink diamonds
Before comparing asking prices, establish what each stone actually is. A grading report and any origin or treatment analysis address different questions from historical provenance; neither should be substituted for the other.
