Who invested in Pillar Security’s $9 million seed round?
Shield Capital led the round, with Golden Ventures, Ground Up Ventures, and strategic angel investors participating, according to Pillar Security’s April 16, 2025 announcement distributed by GlobeNewswire. The company said the proceeds would support R&D and go-to-market activity. The announcement describes a financing event; it does not establish that the company’s technology is effective, widely adopted, or a market leader.
What does Pillar Security do?
Pillar positions its software as an AI-security platform for organizations building or running AI systems and agents. Its company website and platform description describe capabilities spanning discovery, risk assessment, adversarial testing, runtime protection, and governance. These are Pillar’s descriptions of its product, not independently verified performance findings.
Discovery and posture review
Discovery is intended to give organizations visibility into their AI systems and assess their security posture. This stage helps identify what needs protection and where potential risks may lie.
#1 Best Overall
Red teaming
Red teaming uses adversarial tests to probe how an AI system responds to risky inputs or attempts to misuse it. Pillar says its testing results can inform how protections are calibrated for a particular deployment.
Runtime protection
Runtime controls are intended to detect or block threats while an AI system is operating. Pillar’s product materials describe protections for prompt injection, system-prompt leakage, and tool manipulation.
Rank #2
Governance
Governance covers oversight and policy enforcement around AI use. It is the organizational layer of the platform’s stated scope, distinct from testing a model or intervening in an individual interaction.
What are AI security guardrails?
AI security guardrails are controls intended to constrain or monitor an AI system’s behavior and interactions—for example, how it handles instructions or uses connected tools. In Pillar’s framing, guardrails are one part of a broader security program that also includes finding AI assets, assessing risk, testing defenses, and governing use. A guardrail is not, by itself, proof that an AI system is secure; results depend on how controls are configured and how well they address the risks in a specific deployment.

What threats does Pillar’s runtime protection address?
Pillar’s runtime-guardrails page identifies three targets:
- Prompt injection: attempts to manipulate an AI system through instructions embedded in user input or other content it processes.
- System-prompt leakage: attempts to expose hidden instructions that guide the system’s behavior.
- Tool manipulation: attempts to misuse or steer tools connected to an AI system.
Pillar says red-team findings can help tune protections to a deployment. That is a description of the company’s approach, not evidence here of a measured prevention rate or independently tested product performance.

What does the funding announcement say about demand?
Pillar’s announcement said 77% of 1,200 cybersecurity leaders expressed significant concern about AI-specific threats, citing a Deloitte survey. The underlying Deloitte survey was not independently verified in the available sources, so the figure should be understood as a statistic reported by Pillar rather than a separately confirmed survey result.
Elias Manousos, identified in the release as Shield Capital’s lead investor, said: “As agentic AI systems are increasingly being deployed within businesses, hand in hand with an equally burgeoning threat surface, Pillar uniquely understands that securing software in the AI era requires more than incremental improvements.” The quotation reflects the investor’s view; it is not an independent assessment of product results.
